Cute. But no.
Picrel is it. You unironically have to be a master to read it, absorb it, enjoy it, and learn from it.

im genuinely curious how many people have actually read the book and comprehended it. from the little bit ive skimmed it seems incomprehensible.

>>20847953
i finished the first two books and i can confirm that within a budding grove at least was an absolute slog, but still a very beautiful novel and i appreciate prousts insights into the human condition

Wait till you get to the 3rd book with the 100 page party scene. At least I think it was the 3rd book. One of the biggest slogs ever

Is this the kind of book where I should pick apart and analyse every sentence or should I just submit myself to the "stream of consciousness" writing style, not trying to analyse too much?

one of the only books i unironically hate. whenever i read it i feel a visceral hatred for all these nonsense sounds that joyce is transcribing and for the lack of surface level structure. im aware of how long he spent writing it and how it's basically all coded speech with some kind of actual meaning behind it, but the gobbledygook at the surface pisses me off. if this is what getting filtered feels like then so be it. funny to think some people get this feeling from blood meridian or moby dick or whatever.

definitely one of my favorite books ever but i wouldn't say its as difficult as finnegans wake. its basically written in modern english vernacular for starters

If you're talking about actual complexity of language and overall difficulty, neither of these compare. Though Proust is daunting because of length. GR is fantastic but I never found it difficult

Joyce's "difficulty" is artificial and phony. Proust speaks clearly and directly to the human condition.

>> No.20848130

You're obviously gay for Proust. The point is Proust is not 'the final boss' of literature by any metric

>> No.20848157

There is no final boss. The real redpill is reading something that speaks to you at certain moments in your life. That book will differ depending on your age and where your at in life

"Proust? That's not literature." — Cormac McCarthy

>> No.20848235

Cormac McCarthy is the pinnacle of "artificial and phony" literature. Of fucking course he was filtered by Proust's heartfelt and direct style.

There is nothing challenging about this book compared to Finnegans Wake. I love asking good readers to read the first page aloud seeing how far they can get without stumbling, breaking rhythm, mispronounced words, etc. No one can do it everyone gets filtered

very few (ie none) highschoolers would have anywhere near the amount of knowledge to appreciate most of the books chapters. you need to have a pretty solid grasp on the pop culture of the time period, as well as the counter culture movement, various different conspiracy, scientific concepts etc. i read it for the first time at age 18 and i definitely wasn't fully prepared

It's not unusual for academics to devote an entire decade of time and energy to a subject. While some go on to specialize and master one particular aspect of a subject. There are Joyce scholars out there and FW is a book only accessible to them and related literature buffs
