"Alas, Babylon" by Pat Frank is a story about surviving in a Florida town not directly destroyed in a nuclear war. I enjoyed it but people seem to think his writing style is a bit bland and it gets panned because the black family in the book is basically the white families servants.

Lucifer's Hammer. One of my favourite books about a coming apocalypse and the aftermath. More community based prepper stuff than individuals tho if that's what you are looking for .
