I'm a newfag here on /lit/. Fathers & Sons by Ivan Turgenev is the first book I read by lit's recommendation, I really enjoyed it and plan on reading some more Russian literature and more Turgenev and I wanted to know where I should start.

Tolstoy, then Dostoevsky. Devils features a character who is a parody of Ivan Turgenev.

Definitely Dostoevsky could be a good start, the only thing about Tolstoy is that his books can be very long and tedious if you don't understand the russian culture at the time he was writing. I'd start with Pushkin or Gogol before Tolstoy, even though Tolstoy is my personal favorite
