The Bible is mostly a tool that is used on itself by Christ's Church to find morals. It is inerrant in the sense that all verses can be interpretated as being true. For example, yours could take stoning as metaphor, where stones are actually faithful wisdom, as to build a house on God is stone and all altars are from unhewn rock. Your point, ironically, works against Protestants to a large extent but it is also naïve in the extreme.

That was specifically for the Hebrews who had made a covenant with God to be his sanctified representatives on earth in exchange for being freed from Egyptian slavery. They agreed to follow his strict code and be shaped into God's ambassadors. Many of those rules set an example for us of just how high of a bar absolute holy living is, but they were not all intended to be statutes for all of humanity for all times here in this world. They were welcome to remain in Egypt according to the circumstances humans had created in this world rather than take God up on His offer. Never lose sight of these awarenesses while studying the Holy Bible.

A few good commentaries is well worth the while. I have 5 and there are times when each provides a unique insight, and times when each is the best or worst of the bunch. The ESV Study Bible makes a good single volume companion as it provides both a "modern" translation for comparison, commentary annotations, and explanatory articles.
