Seen /lit/ shitting on Dan Brown a lot lately. You know how many new readers he brought to reading the classics and interested the population in reading again? Yeah the Robert Langdon series is a bit cringy in that it’s a white male power fantasy.
>look at my middle aged handsome world renowned professor protagonist with a made up degree who is shy of sex but gets molested often
But overall look at his contribution and accomplishments to literature. If I didn’t enjoy him in elementary school I might not be reading Nabokov now. Anyways say something nice (or bring general discussion).

What are some other good white male power fantasies? I feel like everything panders to nonwhites and w*men nowadays, let's go back to fiction that is fun AND accurately mirrors reality (white men doing everything worth doing)

Can you imagine a black woman protagonist of anything? Black woman and protagonist are practically antonyms.

His books are garbage. I do love how he personally forces people to read his garbage though, Danny boy really does better job than parents and teachers

Thank you Dan and eat a fucking grenade or something

I’d love to read a book with a Black or Indigenous woman protagonist that’s not centred around their pain. I get that pain that effects a person’s background is a pivotal part of their life but most popular black and brown stories focus on that completely. Would be nice to see some black and brown joy in art for once.

You mean affect

Effect is either a noun meaning result of some cause (the effects of something) or a verb meaning cause or bring about (this effected a change in me)

Affect is either a verb meaning cause to change in some way (the rain affected my mood) or a noun pronounced AFFect and meaning general emotional or psychological state (as in flat affect), or a verb meaning to simulate something (he affected to be moved by her plight)

Both of you should stop bitching about grammar I opened this thread looking for white male book recs.
Tom Clancy's earlier stuff is good, though very dry. Any of those 'dad book' type authors fit the bill when Im tired of leftists and their ilk shoving propoganda into otherwise decent books.
Clive cussler, Dale brown, etc.

There is a difference: when you AFFECT a thing, the thing as sub-stance (ὑποκείμενον) remains, at least notionally, but when you EFFECT a thing, you bring that thing about entirely. They are only similar concepts at the surface in that they both relate to "change," but the change that effects a political revolution (by starting it) and the change that affects a cake (by moving it an inch) are quite different.

One should always be mindful of conceptual distinctions, and in general, if someone alerts you to the possibility that you are missing or eliding such a distinction, you should listen, because you may be missing a whole modality or dimension of richness in your own language. Learning new dimensions and articulations of the things you think you already know "well enough" becomes fun rather than a burden after a while, and enhances both your reading (by revealing subtleties and shades of meaning) and your writing (by making you more articulate).

I am too empathetic to have textbook autism but I think I may have the "left brain" tendencies of an autist, just without being severed from holistic/contextual regulation by the right hemisphere as they are for most textbook autists.

Is this supposed to be bad? It's poking fun at Langdon. If you genuinely think this is Brown wanking off to Langdon's perfection then I may be mistaken. I can unironically say that this is probably how I'll write my novels and that likely means I'll never reach any success if people clown on this style so much. But I don't see anything that insane about this passage, at least not enough to take a picture and use it as an example of Brown's hackery.

He writes very basic and formulaic thrillers and if you read one you can guess how the next is going to play out. But desu I kinda enjoy how he manages to weave random trivia and factoids from art and history to create the conspiracy that drives the plot of each book. If he was a band, he'd be Ghost while Umberto Eco would be Mercyful Fate

Dan Brown wrote the same book several times and got away with it without anyone really raising a complaint.
And he did it all the while self-inserting his pasty academic character into someone who battles the hidden powers of the world while banging exotic sexy power-women. I can absolutely respect that.

What?
>why do the students nod enthusiastically about meeting the guy who wrote the course textbook?
You retarded? He's a celebrated figure in the field and it's an optional event. People act the same way when they go to a Jordan Peterson talk.
>college age woman aren't describing anyone's voice as "chocolate for the ears"
She's reading a magazine article.
>the fact that the whole section is just wanking off brown's self-insert
No it isn't? It's explicitly poking fun at Langdon. All you learn about him is that he has some old-guy charm and is accomplished in his field.

I feel like if you take supreme issue with that passage you can be wound up about anything. It's not even bad.

You don't speak English as a first language so you clearly aren't getting it. It's shit writing and the whole scene is comically bad.

>She's reading a pulpy 'inane' article from a profile some shit magazine made about him.
Why? What is the point of it?
>What?
The italicised parts represent his thoughts and it's an incredibly gay humble-brag thing for an obvious self-insert character.
>People act the same way when they go to a Jordan Peterson talk.
Poor choice of example. Again, it's an obvious Dan Brown self-insert. The idea of an a glorified art-history teacher (what the fuck is symbology?)who has an adoring legion of sexy female fans is just Brown's ego talking.
>She's reading a magazine article.
The magazine is quoting the students.
>It's explicitly poking fun at Langdon.
It's not, but I think this is a foreign language issue. Dan Brown isn't exactly subtle but if you don't speak English as a first language you wouldn't be able to tell that it's essentially a ham-fisted humblebrag.

> It's not even bad.
By Brown's standards, it's far from the worst he's written. It's still awful.

>I feel like if you take supreme issue with that passage you can be wound up about anything
Why do people on the internet always assume that everyone (apart from themselves) is always angry? "Supreme issue" KEK come on man.

I agree the woman choice of words but as a college age bloke myself I can tell you I’ve heard the phrase “chocolate for the ears” about the middle aged professor my classmates swoon over. Yeah Brown’s establishing who Langdon is but it’s not completely out of the way. It’s a bit cringe but not completely unrealistic. Women relentlessly sexualising older men can look much worse (I’ve seen it).

>> No.20801076

>>20800736
Thanks for laying all this out so clearly. It's pretty clear you're an utter faggot for taking such issue with a bland passage like this. So much so, you had to come up with some deranged headcanon that English isn't my mother tounge. Pretty embarassing bro. At least I know all the hysterical Brown haters on this board are utter fucking dunces which is pretty ironic when you think about it given how average he is as an author. It's as if we were poring over the pulpy action in a Tom Clancy book just so some greasy thin-wristed spastic (you) could feel superior about it. The only point you keep hammering is 'IT'S CRINGE AND A NO-NO SELF-INSERT' but you haven't said why that's bad? There's plenty of that out there in all forms of writing. You expect the author to make the guy he depicts weaving in and out of conspiracies to be some kind of retarded ugly cunt? Is that who you want to relate to? Well I guess that makes sense.
>Why do people on the internet always assume that everyone (apart from themselves) is always angry?
You're the faggot who took a screencap of a passage you considered so bland and then penned line by line breakdowns about why it's so awful. I don't see why it provokes such displeasure in you. Stop reading the cunt if you hate his prose.
