Traditional Publishing
Pros:
>you get to focus mostly on writing
>you must write a proposal to the publishers and sell your story to them
>you make 10-15% profit max, but they also eat all the risk and the costs
>self publishing is basically like running your own company
>you only need to do some simple marketing and reach out to readers
Cons:
>you make 10-15% profit max
>self publishing you make 70%+
>they’ll still require you to do all the leg work of a self published author anyways

When you're feeling down about how little your book is selling, just remember that "Moby Dick" was a failure in its time.
It didn't become popular until after the 100th anniversary of the author's birth.
Melville tried to make up for the commercial failure by following Moby Dick with a raunchy "urban shocker".
Seems like things stay the same, huh.

>> No.20783683

>>20783651
How many Americans or other people in the world even sympathized with what Melville was writing on a deeper level, in his time? Sure there is a biblical allusion to Ahab that much is clear but he was hitting at a pessimistic theme regarding the Fall of Man that many English speakers didn't get exposed to until after Schopenhauer's work was translated years after it had already been published. I'm not pulling this out of nowhere I was reading this on the Melville Estate website, that is in that Melville and Schopenhauer had similar foundations to their ideas.
Personally I would say the Tower of Babel describes a similar think to the Whale (or the Will) but the Bible only mentions Babel and the spirit of Babylon a couple times so it's only a big idea in people with imagination.

Normies and the internet have utterly ruined sincere storytelling and I'm so utterly tired of pretending that they haven't. The corny ethos of the mainstream internet, combined with the take over of ironic meme culture, the cringe culture of the mid 2010s and the ironic ethos surrounding media that dissuades any thoughtful and in depth analysis has all combined to ruin any sincere storytelling. The 90s is when this first started popping up in large numbers, and it was only exacerbated since then.
You have terms now like
>"Edgy." Implying most artwork isn't transgressive.
>"Self-serious." Implying stories aren't supposed to take themselves seriously.
I'm so fucking tired of it all. I'm so tired of looking at storytelling through so many different layers of ironic detachment. I'm tired of people looking at the world like this. Nobody wants to be impacted by anything. People don't care about fucking ANYTHING. All that people want is to glorify themselves and get their cocks sucked.

The Internet made it possible for people to draw attention to themselves directly.
Social media amplified that.

In short...go to bed, grandpa. It's later than you think.

Maybe I am thinking too lofty for what I know but I hope my writing can cultivate some momentum toward some other mode of writing. I bet there's some sincerity looking in the right magazines at lit fic but that's what like 1% of the book market these days? I don't have a fully coherent view since I'm not a philosopher or anything but all I can do is just speak my voice and if I'm tapping into some greater understanding so be it. Some themes that reoccur in my writing and outlines so far are the death of sarcasm (not that it is dead but that I find it old-hat) but also anti-intellectualism in general, which I prefer to call obstinacy because the latter term has a pejorative ring to it.

This is based on a mix of personal experience and reading a LOT about writing:
-Outline outside and ideally away from home
-Write at night

Strictly avoid writing actual story shit during the day. Only outline what you're going to write.
This helps with ensuring your brain produces fresh ideas constantly and when you settle down to sleep narrows down into a fine point when you get it all off your chest.

Deconstructing the science makes the society in the story seem less idyllic and more preprogrammed which is against the impression I wanted. Instead I have started showing things first as mysterious but hanging a flag on it so people know it's not a mistake and then later hint at how it works (like breathing underwater, or putting on eyes).
I have read a lot of scifi in my time and even science texts to convince myself of certain things for my story but I when I write certain scientific terms it doesn't feel right to me. I wrote some paragraphs explaining how nanomachines would do their thing and then threw it into another document. Just read interesting things and expand your world beyond the dingy little cell of yourself. Read a fucking Dickens book, read a history of Babylonian daily life, read about 1930s bootlegger escapades. You're not a pathetic worthless subhuman, at least any more than the rest of us. All you are is lazy, because you can't be bothered to look up at anything else around you, and you're content to instead obsess over the little scrap of dirt beneath you as if it were your whole world and the profound truth of your existence.

Don't start referencing a more interesting thing. You made me want to replay the game instead of reading it, which I'm sure isn't your goal in a suicide letter.
Also don't start a personal thing by referencing a product. If I wanted to be mean I'd assume you don't have a personality, just a list of products you've consumed to define yourself. But you're just protecting your personal feelings by putting already defined personal depictions in the way, and a suicide note isn't really the time to hide your personal feelings.

it's just clearly not sincere. You start being a basic bitch, which is what you are, you accept it and try to understand how things got that way. Then you question why you chose that explanation and not another, you try to define what parts you're ignoring or stealing pre-made justifications and why. Once you feel you've hit a realization that wrecks you and only you, you develop it trying to make it understandable to others. Maybe guiding the reader from a basic normal spot to where you're at, replicating the proces you took, creating a compatible scenario and twisting it into your position, or whatever. I believe that's the proper way to write your suicide note.

Writing can't be taught or distilled to a single sentence. It's an art that must be learned through diligence and practice. It isn't an engineering formula that has a known solution. It isn't a code block which must be written in a specific way to score correctly with an autoscorer. It isn't a matrix that can be reduced to the identity matrix for easy solutions. There is no textbook with answers, no unique physics approach, no change of basis trick, no github or stackoverflow solution, no unit analysis, black box solver, or predictable probability distribution that will make you a good writer. It takes time, effort, and study. If you want to be a good writer, you read and you write. You hone your craft by thinking, writing, editing, reading, and participating in continual refinement of your work. It takes years. There are no shortcuts. There isn't a formula for "compelling, realistic characters who are grounded and breathe" that will make your writing truly good, despite what all those infographics purportedly claim. I'll say it one more time: Writing. Must. Be. Learned. It cannot be taught. There is no fast and hard solution which you can get from one, a hundred, or even 1 million 4chan posts. This advice is as good as it's going to get.

Yeah, AI can't hold copyright, and they don't pull words or sentences directly from the works in it's database.

It all works by turning words and syllables into tokens and within the context given, uses math to randomly determine what the next most likely token in the sentence should be, because language is just math.

Ex "Trevor ate his grandma's apple"
The next word could be "tree" or "core" or "seed" but given the context, it'll probly return "pie".

>> No.20785818

>>20785122
Skimming over again it doesn't look like you took any of my advice last time, which is fine, but I still feel the same - 9y needs more experiential description/in-scene time/"showing" and some dialogue.

For example when the chef directs MC to a mechanic we are told how overworked old, and chill the chef is - why not have a scene in the alley behind the restaurant where we see his crusty grease stained aa they pass a blunt back and forth between like 5 lines of dialogue explaining boats issues and ending with him writing some mechanic guy's phone number on a napkin?

That's just an example of course but it's the grounding I would need as a reader to stay interested.

>> No.20785835

>>20785777
it's not really a nightmare. The basic fallback interpretation is that it is copyright infringement and any author who gets caught using an AI that isn't entirely based on public domain writing will be held accountable for it. Maybe someday somebody will bring to court a compelling case as to how an AI training data set of copyrighted material doesn't constitute infringement, but you'd have to get a court to fall against copyright holders, something they rarely do as copyright is constitutionally guaranteed in an extremely vague way.

>> No.20785853

>>20785835
There's only so many ways to write "Trevor ate his grandma's apple pie".

You can't copyright that. You can only copyright that entirety of the events that lead up to and proceed after your MC gyrates her hips in front of a pack of werewolves, but not the gyrating itself.

>> No.20785903

>>20785853
It doesn't matter how transformative it is. An AI model doesn't extract pure concepts out of a piece of literature, the training data is transformed via algorithm into generated text. Using copyrighted training data is exactly the same, legally, as playing somebody else's song with different lyrics written for it. It does not matter if you cannot unwind the generated text into the training data, and because of that you can probably get away with it.

Is there a limit to how ridiculous the antagonist can get when writing a non-comedic story? Is there a point where the reader’s suspension of belief snaps and they can’t take the story seriously anymore?

For example, a hypothetical antagonist
>Blonde haired blue eyed white man
>Travels in pine wood UFO that’s in the shape of a swastika
>Said UFO has weapons like bows that fire arrow-shaped nuclear bombs
>Uses a stone hammer, resembling Thor’s hammer, that is actually a lightning gun
>Uses a blood-sacrifice powered golden chariot that creates a mini-sun, which performs a mini-coronal mass ejection that destroys a city
>Hyperborean
>Name is some Proto-Indo-European cognate of horse god
>Main goal is to harvest vril energy generated by mass hatred in order to open a portal to Hyperborea and return home

Both Planescape and Disco Elysium are extremely similar in their approach to dialogue, now is far more grand in scale but Elysium is extremely personal, Harry as a character and his skills. It's unique and very interactive, very complete and attempts to be literary in structure.
Disco Elysium is shit compared to the greats of literature, but as a videogame it's top 3. It has a massive personality in the way you see the world as Harry.

Hotline Miami has great writing and a part of me knows that I shouldn't be looking into Elysium and rather here. I've played and loved both Furi and E.Y.E and frankly, as a story, they're similar to what I'm trying to make. Complete coincidence too, never considered until now.

I'm trying to make a game based on a movie I'd love to do, but I am not trying to be a complete moviegame, it's about being a complete seizure, attack the screen.
But I need strong characters, very personal stakes.

in case you aren't laughing, let me explain this underrated gem to you: usually, when someone writes a screenplay, or anything really, they try to make it good or at least original. but whoever wrote the gangweed screenplay decided to make it BAD and intentionally included (intentionally bad) memes into HIS SCREENPLAY and he did it ON PURPOSE.

Think about that for a moment. This is genuine artistric integrity. He doesn't even care if people think its dumb, in fact, he's actually one step ahead of them. He's acting dumb on purpose. This is all a game to him, and we are but chess pieces to be knocked over. I know, its pretty deep, it takes a while to understand the humor at play here. that's why its so important that we keep reposting it, because not only do more people need to understand that this is funny, but it allows 'oldfags' who are in on the joke, like us, to continue to delight in its mighty wit each and every time we see it. Truly brilliant, almost gardnerian in its execution.

No, I mean I am unironically the author of Gang Weed the Movie.

I think we should cut the paragraph "A distant engine SCREECHES in the snowstorm. JULIAN is startled awake, gasping for air. A nightmare."

But my problem is that if you cut that and go straight from Darkness. to "CLICK, CLICK, CLICK," then when you introduce Julian and have him cough, it looks like "JULIAN COUGHS" because the sound is in all caps, making it seem as though that's his name.

We could move the engine screeching later, but it's thematically significant that Edmund is responsible for his recurring nightmares about The Slammer burning down.

What I want to do is have the engine screech and Julian startled awake during the intro credits, before we're on the clock for the sixty minutes of the movie, since it's in real time. Not sure how to format that, but if anyone has any ideas, I'll fix it.

I want to write a book about a family man in modern America who, through boredom and a lack of satisfaction, falls into a depraved lifestyle.

Anyways, here's the working start to it.

>Under fluorescent lights, squeezed on one side of a table between two other heavy-breathing IT specialists, Matthew Etterman experienced a moment of true existential crisis – a crushing moment of self-realization. A completely unabashed truth shone in his heart like a beacon, guiding him to past glory days: the happiest days he had ever lived. Senior year of college – spring break, Florida, Palm Trees, and a loud heat spurred by the roar of wheels on pavement. He drank carelessly and made decisions on a whim; played with friends, prowled the slick poolside populated with those barely dressed women – ass cheeks and breasts spilled out from behind polyester panties, sun-tanned skin squeezed by bra strings, drinking and laughing. The thought had his heart palpitating. It has been twenty years since those wild and mischievous days, and Matthew’s now 38-year-old heart could barely take it. The slim figure he had back at the poolside had long been fluffed and softened through years of neglect and apathy; babies and marriage took precedent over self-care. Even worse than the tightened throbbing arteries past his ribcage was – the return of something he had been missing fondly – an erection. A real erection. One filled with excitement that made the face flush and the body hot. Matthew, in a hurry, rolled further under the table to conceal himself; he eyed the prompter of all this excitement: a simple survey form, a singular sheet of paper with the prompt “Describe the Happiest Day of Your Life.” Among twenty or so other coworkers all calmly filling out their forms, Matthew had no choice but to write, “The day my daughter was born.”

Swirling golden dust blew past Ostra as he stood under a black sun. The void star, encircled by a glowing ring that oscillated blinding rays, smothered the young man as he stood on a sea of sand.
In the distance he saw Zotu struggling against a form that spewed clouds of dust… or was it smoke. Ostra could not tell.
“Hey, leave him be!”
Zotu screamed and Ostra launched himself into the assailant. The contact he made was as if he were tackling the morning mist. He landed hard in the sand. The grit scraping his face and shoulder raw.
Rolling over he saw that the figure now mirrored Zotu. Zotu recovered and locked hands with the attacker. Now they were pushing and shoving trying to keep themselves square on the shifting ground.
It took a bit but the realization left Ostra in wonder. Zotu was fighting his shadow. The shade was the same size and shape as Zotu but void of any color. The wisps of colorless clouds fell off the creature. Ostra wondered how he sailed through that shadow like it was vapor but Zotu fought like it were truly there.
Ostra got to his feet and rushed to the fray but they vanished. Confused, Ostra closed his eyes and opened them. The boy and his shadow were gone.

The question is "What should it be?"
See, there's a giant alligator who's whole thing is that it's friends with the gangs of NYC.
It also ends up teaming up with a man who has incredibly severe gigantism to the point where he needs to wear a specialized suit that normalizes his body functions. It's that kind of story.

Has a great opening line, the middle collapses I think into too much early depiction, but the end rounds out nicely. It may read better if you move the middle to the end, or possibly shorten it, or just reword it. Either way I like the direction it has. Clearly establishes character and is well written. When are you going to write more?

One, it's should be its since it's a possessive, whereas it's is a plural.
The 'd contraction is used correctly but it looks odd because normally the contraction is used with pronouns. Why do you want to shorten it anyways?

You the other Elder Scrolls anon? Made any progress?

For me I just have a fiction writing folder with subfolders for major genres I dabble in (fantasy, historical fiction, baldcore). Every story gets just gets one word doc - drafting at the top and outline at the bottom. Outlines are just a few bullet points for major ideas key events to come that get fleshed out more if the piece has legs.

Once something has multiple chapters it is worthy of its own subfolder.

Seriously though. Gardner is like the perfect example of the hero we deserve. Did people think we’d get the next Shakespeare from these generals? Of course not. The end result is fucking Call of the Crocodile. A glorified /x/tier creepypasta by a mentally unhinged NEET flat earther. Pulp fiction.

Thanks for the grammar correction, been using a new word processor without a spelling checker and I've gotten sloppy. I like contractions becase I write in a very verbose way and I'm trying to whore wordcount as much as possible without castrating my beefier paragraphs.

Asking purely for advice on formatting. These 2 characters are twins who speak in turns, each quotation is one of them. single lines are either because one of them is finishing their thoughts or because the main character is speaking. I hope with how odd they are that its clear when he is speaking vs the twins.
I am thinking that 2 per line with left as the sister, right as the brother. I will likely change this in editing, might make it so they always speak twice per line. Making it clearer when the MC is speaking.

I agreed to assist a relative's proyect of writing small stories for some NGO that deals with children going through grief and wrote something from a sample he sent me. The difference between third person omniscient and third person limited isn't sharply defined. You have some wiggle room. It's more a matter of consistency than correctness. It would seem weird if that were the only time in the text you switched away.
