The first one made me laugh, but I much prefer the second one. The futuristic airport setting is eerie and unsettling in a way that works really well. I’d suggest you do some editing before you submit though, because I noticed typos and sentence fragments throughout. There were also a few instances in which you could have applied the “show, don’t tell” rule (a cliché, I know) to achieve greater effect— specifically in the part where you wrote that “Peter turned the corner and saw something disturbing.” I think it’d read better if you instead described his reaction in a way that lets the reader infer that he’s disturbed by what’s in front of him. Anyway, if you don’t want critique then feel free to ignore, but I can give you more detailed feedback later if you’re interested.

I'm thinking of submitting a letter I'm writing to my ex girlfiend that moved to another city and became a published writer and book tiktoker. It has some valuable reflections on writing in the age of cultural overproduction and the desire to reach out and say something amongst a sea of noise. But in the interest of improving the quality and reputation of the zine, I’d suggest that, if your work includes slurs, then make sure they serve a legitimate artistic purpose of some kind. If you’re just spewing /pol/-tier racism then no one one wants to read your lazy shit anyway, so try to actually put in the effort to create something meaningful instead.

Might be nice to do a “best of” issue, but it’d be hard to figure on how to decide which works to include. Would it just be based on editor’s choice? I agree that it’d be cool to have a more structured post-release critique of submissions too. Kind of pains me that the ones that get the most attention in the “new issue” threads seem to be the shitposts.

The review would really be a basic framework to use to sperg out about the philosophical implications of sustainable farming, deep ecology, etc. It would be played completely straight.

I already have the poem done so maybe I should just go for it.

I’m trying to decide on what to submit for the next issue. I have a few finished sonnets I wrote last year that I might submit as a triad, but considering that &amp seems to need more content, I thought it might be nice to submit a longer work instead. Lately I’ve been working on a long poem written in iambic tetrameter quatrains that I’m considering sending in. It’s loosely inspired by Tennyson’s “In Memoriam A.H.H,” which is about his grieving process after the untimely death of his closest friend. Although the subject matter of mine is admittedly far more self-indulgent and less tragic, it deals with vaguely similar themes of trying to reconcile personal melancholy with the outer world, the changing seasons, and the passage of time. However, I’m not finished with it yet, and will probably have to work intermittently for at least another week or two to get a finished draft that I’m happy with.

I also have a finished experimental prose fiction piece that I’ve considered sending in, but I’m leaning towards trying to publish that in my local literary zine instead. I’d prefer to send in my poetry to &amp, because its subject matter is so personal that I’d prefer to stay anonymous, and most actual journals won’t publish formal verse these days anyway. Any thoughts? Maybe I’ll post some excerpts later.

I’ve never read Fussell, but I’m really interested in the mechanics of formal verse, so I’ll check him out. I also like to read poetry in smaller quantities, because it’s so dense with content that in relatively few lines there’s so much that you can unpack and mull over. What are the common qualities in the poems that you’ve liked and revisited? Any favourite poets?

>>20787232
This made me laugh. He most definitely deserves an artistic tribute.

I’m still trying to decide on what to submit for the upcoming issue. I have a few finished sonnets I wrote last year that I might submit as a triad, but considering that &amp seems to need more content, I thought it might be nice to submit a longer work instead. Lately I’ve been working on a long poem written in iambic tetrameter quatrains that I’m considering submitting. But I’m not finished with it yet, and will probably have to work intermittently for at least another week or two to get a draft that I’m happy with.

I also have some experimental short fiction that I could throw in, but I’m considering publishing that in a local zine under my actual name, so I’m undecided. I’d rather submit poetry to &amp because there aren’t really any opportunities to have formal verse published through traditional channels these days. And I work so hard on my shit that it’d be cool to have some sort of audience for it— plus, as the subject matter is so personal it’s nice to be able submit anonymously.

Thomas Wolfe is my fav so far but Ive read James Dickey, currently reading Ezra Pound and then Yeats. John Milton and Wolfe are big influences in my prose. Wolfe was like the father of the beat gen and he's got this really haunting use of repetition that I just really like. He is dramatic but his words aren't too big, it's really approachable I think.

Not an artist, but from what I remember from art class and friends that paint, part of it is studying the craft and practicing often. Depending on the medium there are lots of techniques, little tricks that help you give the impression of shape, light, all kinds of things. Maybe it's a particular brush, color contrast, who knows? Writing is the same way. We have rhetoric tricks, cadence and literary devices that give interesting impressions. There can be so many things going on in writing that it seems like magic but it's really all practice and awareness of your bag of tricks and what effects your writing are going to have. If I were learning art I'd look at it the same way.

I can also say that the editor's gay little interjection pages are, like the graphic design, much better than the actual content of the magazine. Fewer errors...

There was nothing that stood out as particularly egregious, and I guess that's the worst part. It was all just really, really mediocre in a tiresome way. The thing about the guy who killed dogs was just edgy for edginess's sake. The thing by the guy with depression was just proof that depression doesn't always lead to great art. It seemed maudlin.

It's just corny... like, "wastrel?" Who says that?

the school of athens is trying to be funny without trying to be funny, in the worst way...

>The night hangs soft against its neon backdrop, those lonely lights
reaching out as far as they can go. With a little less clutter, a little less
obsessive illumination, one could have seen from this vantage the sea
in the instantiation of its shifting dispositions. As it were, one cannot...

the worst most pretentious unreal purple prose... the sea in the instantiation of its shifting dispositions? horrible.

shower thoughts of apricots is singsong and ugly. fucking doggerel

the MRA poem is pretty awful too. Like I said man, it's like a puddle of toxic sludge.

Which part of the puddle is the worst? I don't know, I don't really care. I wish it was food.

Oh, actually, the freshman mid tier college essay on James Joyce is the worst. What the fuck are you doing putting that in your magazine?

I wrote the Shit-Eater Triptych and I agree with you on it. These are criticisms I've heard before (crude, directionless, etc.). I've received some compliments in threads for things I've written, but I think most of it is because I write stuff that's over-aligned to the robot/DOOMER/whatever mindset that dominates on here, just ticking all the boxes to the "woah im sad and useless fuck the world" archetype. It passes with the crowd on here because it's low-hanging fruit that every sop can relate to without it actually meaning anything or going anywhere. >>20793401 put it right with "maudlin" and for pointing out the shitty diction that plagues the shit I write. >assblasted over critique of someone else's work
These threads shouldn't be a hugbox. Most of the shit that appears does suck, and unless there's actual treatment of criticism it's going to stay that way. A lot of it is piggybacking on the editor's work to sit smug and pretend like our shit is worth something because someone else bound it up and made it look nice. While I think the whole endeavour is interesting and worthwhile and __fun__, it's clearly going to run into the dirt if you dismiss actual criticism. I submit for practice and fun, and I don't want it to be a useless exercise in writing pandering shit for people who think bad work ought to be defended. I don't think anything in &amp is totally irredeemable, but let's not pretend that even a fraction of it is actually good.

I like reading &amp, I like sending stuff in. I like some of the stuff in it, and even find stuff like the pedo story redeeming for at least being funny, but it's clearly swamped with low-effort, ESL, and pointless crap. /crit/ threads way back had the same problem of a 20:1 ratio of posters to actual critiques, little better than pissing into the wind, just a slog of trite shit with rare moments of actual critique.

Pic related from the editor, cut from earlier in the thread which none of you seemed to read.

Also I forgot to say this, but there were a couple things in your prose that I thought were pretty good, such as when you described the possibility of being caught "half nude mid shit" because this halfway/middle point language encapsulates I think one of the main themes here which is sort of like your whole life being caught in a "liminal space," as it were, a depressed alcoholic on the margins of normalfag society, functional enough to have a job and get by on his own, but not normal enough to fit in with coworkers.

Thanks, I'd appreciate it. On the point of being crude: do you think there's a way to do it without fucking up the writing? I'm gonna guess it's a matter of moderation.

And any advice on giving it direction? Was there an obvious point where things could have taken a turn and been interesting narrative-wise?

>>20794200
>>20794225
I'm glad there was some sense of theme to it. The language with "half-nude mid-shit" wasn't so deliberate other than trying to make it sound good, though I'll take note of the way that worked out. I'm happier with the writing itself compared to the narrative, which was a pastiche of three originally unrelated things that I decided later on to tie together. The three on their own were already meandering/pointless, so I can see how boring it is, especially in sequence. And I wouldn't want to call the shit-tych "doomer writing", but it did turn out cliché in that way. Ah well. I liked the spiralling-down feeling of writing it, but obviously that doesn't make things interesting if that's all there is, especially not in short-form.

Anything else in the writing that worked well?

I respect your willingness to listen to criticism and predict that you will eventually succeed. Keep trying

One tip is that your story should be ABOUT something. Look at your favorite movies and you will soon realize that they are all fundamentally about some basic, one sentence concept.

A story isn't a movie, mind you, but they're both narrative things, and ultimately about just one thing. Start there.

So, like: "A guy is depressed" isn't a story.

Look at fight club (something close): a guy is inducted into a secret manly underground fighting society and terrorist network which wishes to restore masculinity to the world.

Step one is making it about something, step two is making sure the reader's interest is grabbed pretty soonish.

the raw stuff is there, but the substance (form) is missing. the idea of spit in soup isn't that 'literary,' really,* and I don't think the protag, for all his neuroticism, really approaches it in a realistic, or even psychologically credible (if he is a virgin/nutjob/paranoid) way. I mean, why *did* the guy spit in his soup? is there any explanation? If you're trying for a dreamlike surrealism, it's essential (in my opinion) to "cover your tracks," to make things at least have some superficial appearance of plausibility. You need a fig-leaf, to increase excitement, otherwise whatever is hiding beneath is just ugly. The last line of the story, on the level of realism, ought to be the first.

The great pleasure of literature, what it can do which other mediums can't do, is shamelessly indulge in these "neurotic" ratiocinations. Why did he spit in my soup? Is it because I'm white? That's not *really* spit, is it? Maybe the juice that the chicken was packed in just pooled that way...

etc. just off the top of my head. For that matter I'm not really sure whether spit would really show up in soup. It depends on the consistency. But you see that processing that into an inner argument would be mildly entertaining, humorous at least. Although I know it's obnoxious and unhelpful when someone critiques you by saying "this is how I would do it." I just think you need to be more grounded in vernacular reality.

For that matter, even the first sentence, unfortunately, is kind of "off." It's been a few minutes, but you noticed the soup instantly? So, what are you saying? You've been holding back from eating for minutes at a time? That's very unusual. Your soup will get cold...

>>20794623
no, the joke in the first image with the cowgirl is that the viewer (which we typically take to be photographic and thus hyper impartial, even in pornographic furry anime—in fact, in pornographic furry anime, the illusion of realism contributes a great deal to the tittilation)—this viewer, the "visual narrator" so to speak, is untrustworthy, but we only find this out after we have absorbed the hot cowgirl and move over to the words. It's a genuinely bizarre and funny joke, and it works. She's not a cowgirl, and (absurdly enough) he can even hear her complaint! Yet like a true psycho, he thinks he's totally sane. She protests, but she's sadly deluded. She *is*, in fact, a cowgirl. It's just funny.

And the second one is, like I said, verging onto pretentiousness, but it still means something. An anime style furry is a confused blend of signs and signifiers, only really legible to extremely fucked up coomers. It's a picture of some obscene undercurrent of our soul. There's at least some interplay between the idea of society as a constant spectacle and the fact that a furry anime girl is saying it. Idk. Less good than the cowgirl one. But interesting. or maybe I'm just a coomer. Idk.

>> No.20794668

>or maybe im just a coomer
That's exactly it, my friend. There's nothing amusing or subversive about feckless nonsense like this. If this is the direction "underground literature" is taking, I want no part in it. There's still beauty in the world, elsewhere.

>> No.20794751

>>20794644
The points on realism make a lot of sense, so I'll keep that in mind; unless there's an aim for surrealism, unrealistic shit is just going to make the reader detach. I could have done a lot more to make it seem plausible. Do you have any suggestions on what I could have done to make it psychologically credible? I've got no qualms about the "this is how I would do it" thing.

About the spitting itself, the point was to explore a really conspiratorial notion about the world and feelings of weakness: that others can somehow sense (your) weakness and that they prey on it; how quickly infuriating it is to be trapped between yourself and society and anonymous cruelty. The spit itself is plainly unrealistic, and genuinely pointless (never meant for there to be a real motive), but I was hoping for it to be more of a portrayal of a certain line of thinking. It's a way of thinking that I struggle with internally, and the whole thing was inspired by episodes of my father. Probably a similar trap to my other writing in being overly personal and therefore opaque to a reader.

>> No.20794829

>>20794751
I don't think that "too personal" is really a problem, weirdly enough. If it's authentic, people can mysteriously tell.

I guess in terms of psychological credibility... just, what would you actually do if someone had spit in your soup?

I think that everything hinges on whether the spit really happened or not. If it didn't, that changes everything. I get artistic ambiguity (a very fruitful thing), but that doesn't seem present here. If he's just hallucinating... that's beyond mere paranoia, you know?

Being verbose isn't a good thing, and if the author doesn't have a good handle on the language he uses it's going to detract from the story. The language should serve a purpose. Since anon was on about Bones of the City, I'll say I found it interesting, but the writing can be tough to get through. (The author chimed in last thread and said he's writing "meandering, maximalist piece of experimental fiction", which I'm assuming Bones is a sample of.) He shoots for something abstract without a strictly coherent narrative, and the verbosity on top of that makes it incoherent at times.

So, just so we're clear, the bishop Winchester wasn't a scheming, duplicitous man who (as was commonly viewed in England at the time) used the structures of the church for personal gain by meddling in politics?

Winchester was an unmitigated villain. I look forward to reading and dismantling your 101-level "essay" on why Shakespeare was very trad and super cath. The mockery it invites is going to be delicious.

I said here >>20799962 that "if he had any religion at all" it was protestant. I'm not just covering my bases as an argumentative tactic. My own opinion is that the bard was irreligious — spiritual, perhaps, but irreligious. It's just like you sectarian retards to be so far up your own asses that you get caught, hook, line, and sinker, in this black-and-white us vs. them mentality.

I thought this was a rhetorical question. I don't understand why anyone could possibly get sufficiently invested in such a flimsy idea without being personally involved in the religious feud. If the primary rebuttal to Winchester being a villain is that Claudius was a villain too, it's such a spurious and specious refutation that it invites speculation. Claudius was corrupt in a personal way. He had personal failings and is nowhere near as reliant upon his interactions with protestantism as Winchester is with catholicism to express his villainy. In Winchester you see the direct meddling of Rome in domestic politics. It is the structure of the catholic church which is interfering in matters of the monarchy. He is, in this way, a direct stand-in for the papacy — and amplified when Winchester is cardinalized. Where Winchester's power and influence are directly granted by the catholic church which enables his personal power grab, Claudius is himself a king and unattached to any external (and crucially, WRT catholicism: foreign) structures of power. It is an incredible stretch to read the villainy of Claudius and see Claudius Bad = Protestants Bad in the way that Winchester can be taken as a direct representation of catholicism.

>>20800125
Why would a Protestant king have any structure for power except himself? He answers to nobody but himself, there is no Pope. Claudius tries to have his cake and eat it in the confession scene; his pathetic watered down version of confession comes with himself wanting to say sorry but also keep what he has gained. Salvation through faith alone can be abused and that is seen here. You're taking all this very personally and making me out to be some trad LARPer when in essence it's just an exploration into how Catholic and Protestant beliefs are presented in Hamlet and what we can infer from that.

>>20800156
Very weak argument to "prove" (>>20799869) Shakespeare was catholic. Nothing you've said even addresses the fact that there are much more concrete examples of Shakespeare himself having anti-church views. And, as I've said, I see Shakespeare as more of a secularist than anything else. That Claudius is protestant could much more realistically be incidental rather than causal. That Winchester is catholic is causal to his character. He is a villain; and his catholicism enables and is deeply intertwined with his villainy in a way that can only be read as anti-catholic.

Religion is scattered througout the play and it plays a very obvious part. I don't see why you're trying to downplay that. Claudius praying for forgiveness and Hamlet's refusal to kill him then and there are both so protestant in nature. He confesses personally, without a priest and as we see it's a pathetic non-confession where he wants his cake and to eat it as well. Hamlet refuses to kill him because he would go straight to heaven. Hamlet is after coming back from Wittenberg and I'm sure you know what happened there.
Good God the entire character of King Hamlet appears as a ghost straight from purgatory and Hamlet struggles with the nature of that for nearly 2/3rd's of the play. The Catholic vs Protestant conflict isn't even that hidden, it's quite obvious to anybody familair with the time and beliefs of both sects.

>If you’ve already submitted something for the next one, tell us about it
All right so now that I'm rested up, the story I submitted is "And Over the Town." It's a scifi story with Christian apocalyptic undertones. The story looks at Western society in the 22nd century with isolated company towns, the incorporation of Augmented Reality over VR, the Genetic and Nanomachine revolutions having taken place but before the Robotics revolution, the elite class' conflicted views on history's next step, and the apotheosis of a super-intelligence. There is a monster and pic related is part of the motif. I am drawing heavily from prophecy and taking a look at several characters with very different motivations for their beliefs. One character named Tayler does not appear in the story but he is of utmost importance in my next story. If you check the context of his description as an "augur" it tells you all you need to know about him right now.
Technically the short story is the cut first chapter of the novel I'm working on. That novel sequel follows the characters after these events and explores their past before it. That story is still founded upon the scientific speculation (mostly Ray Kurzweil) but I turn even harder away from explaining the science than I do in "And Over the Town". I want something more about the characters and less about trying to survive, but "And Over the Town" has this dystopian feel that gives context to the idyllic world of the novel.
I am approximately 60 days from submitting that novel to a copyeditor to prepare for publication but I expect delays to kick that well into Spring of next year.
