What's your thoughts on In Order to Live by Yeonmi Park?

>> No.20750743

It's a good book that /lit/ will deny because a woman wrote it.

She's just a grifter. Escape From Camp 14 is much better, even if parts of it were faked.

Woman book. Did not read

>> No.20750809

It’s mediocre. The writing isn’t that great, which makes the story at times less impactful. Story is otherwise pretty harrowing, taken at face value. Since reading I have checked out some more of her work and it seems she is grifting pretty hard. She has done a bunch of “NK is gonna collapse anytime now peeps! It’s aboutta happen!” amongst some other strange quotes, which make me somewhat doubt the validity of the book.

All that for plastic surgery? I will never understand women.

It's just anti-North Korea agit prop. whether its true or not. I've seen so much fake propaganda concerning North Korea over the years I don't believe anything anymore.

Literally paid grifter propaganda, other North Korean defectors have called her out on her shit

having lived the life of a serb construction worker, i always felt like a soft best korean
just like yeonmi had to go through mongolia, i thought i should go through my version of mongolia, which is trying to set up life somewhere else in europe on my 400$/month wage while my rent is 250$ and i work hard manual labor 10 hours a day, 60-70 hours a week, EVERY SINGLE FUCKING WEEK
i have the bleeding blisters on both hands and feet to prove it

anyway if i understand correctly, even after you jump the berlin wall, even after you dodge the best korean or serb or 3rd world in general gulag, you can only land in 1st world, abstract kind of gulag, much less physical but much more orwellian
ok i can halve work hours, im probably never having bleeding blisters again and i get to consoom corporate diabetes products
but
i can no longer drink beer at work and sing loudly ultranationalist songs
i can get sent to virtual gulag for internet jokes i made a decade ago (many such cases)
i must worship multiculturalism even if i dont understand it (you have tractors and combines there, so why do you have to have minorities too?)
jesus statues are being destroyed, oh well, ok, but you are now making fentanyl floyd statues to replace them?
burn-loot-murder (blm for short) protests are mostly peaceful you tell me, and i get gulaged if i notice differently?
race doesnt matter and isnt real you tell me, but all leadership positions must be minorities?
i cant be proud of my ancestors because i am not them, but i have to pay the holocaust pensions tax from my paycheck?
i have to interrupt my daily corporate office droning where i do nothing all day, to be lectured about women having penises and men giving birth and all that?
i have to send my kid to school to be beheaded by a random jihadi (europe) or shot (usa), and i get gulaged for speaking against this new vibrant cultural practice?

my thoughts are that i have to build myself a boat, learn how to live on the ocean, and finally die there alone in peace
im from a landlocked country, i dont know anything about the ocean, maybe that's how you escape gulag for real

does the construction job pay much better than working at like tortilla casa or maxi? like why break your back for not much more money

to give you the taste of 3rd worldism that reigns here, even a toilet cleaner job requires ruling party membership card, and in order to get one of those you have to apply for membership and volunteer and spread party propaganda and consistently vote and all this vile shit for years, YEARS, before you get any benefits, all of this is unpaid labor AND the ruling party is such an open thieving corrupt criminal organization that they stopped bothering to cover their latest criminal affairs after affair #123123
the ruling party is unironically dealing drugs in the street, assassinating cops and rivals, selling weapons to isis types, and so on

so, construction work and seasonal fruit picking is essentially the only job you can apply for and start working, you have some 70% odds of actually getting paid, sometimes they simply dont pay you, and your bosses carry handguns and have bodyguards who shave heads and have a glass eye because their organic eye got beaten out of them in prison, best of luck getting your earned pay if they dont feel like paying that month

fucking 1stoids dont know how good they have it

Both of these are complete bullshit. A River In Darkness is good because it's not completely unbelievable, it tells a story of poverty and starvation and nothing more (well, and escape, obviously). No bullshit torture methods or anything like that. Just a family's life during the famine.

The søi In Order to Live by millennial Yeonmi Park:
>poorly written
>events happened in childhood so it was all in the past when she her brain was still developing
>did nothing brave, all the action is done by the adults, she just observed or followed along
>didn't even witness any brutality
>is well-adjusted as an adult
>has a happy and uncomplicated ending
Meanwhile, the chad Survival in the Killing Fields: A Cambodian Odyssey by Dr. Haing "S." Ngor
>overall autobiography, the story of one man's life with a focus on his life living as a labourer in the work camps
>deftly and movingly written
>experienced in adulthood so details are vivid and correct
>witnessed the worst kinds of brutalitu and deprivation man can come up with
>used his intelligence and skill as a medical doctor to stay alive, as well as sheer luck. By all likelihood he shouldn't have survived.
>meanwhile the book is a love story about him and his wife
>book is filled with poignancy, tragedy, unfettered violence, tenderness, loss, anger, life, death, tenacity, love
>ending is complicated and uncertain
Choose wisely.
