Interested to know if anyone else has read this and what their thoughts were - I found it to be pretty stunning and very unique. Such an intricate inner life and he paints a past that feels real and ancient at the same time. The language mostly worked for me, after a bit of time I keyed into the rhythm and managed to make sense of things

I loved it. The language wasn't that hard to get used to. I like the idea that he is just outside the historical story of Hereward without realizing it.

I don't think anyone read it because my epic meme got ignored.

Thank you. Honestly I haven't read it yet, only the intro and first chapter. I want to, just been reading other stuff. I didn't know the Norman invasion was so horrible.

I like this author but I don’t understand the English complex regarding the Normans.

Buccmaster is also just funny. Like insisting they should blood-eagle the bishop until it is pointed out that the blood eagle was a Norse thing and not an English tradition.

On English neck a Norman yoke wasn't just a meme.

>The King stopped at nothing to hunt his enemies. He cut down many people and destroyed homes and land. Nowhere else had he shown such cruelty. This made a real change. To his shame, William made no effort to control his fury, punishing the innocent with the guilty. He ordered that crops and herds, tools and food be burned to ashes. More than 100,000 people perished of starvation.

Okay, but that was a thousand years ago and it’s part of their history now. Presumably, many Britons even have Norman ancestry, and Norman surnames are found all over the New World in former British colonies. Why talk about “the Norman yoke” if you were also the Normans? Why don’t they just get over it?
