if everybody followed the advice here to a T, we'd be worse than yesmen. we'd all be silent. so, refuted by Kant's categorical imperative (which in turn is refuted by his own critique of pure reason, since our ability to conceptualize a law that we could will universally is predicated on our sensible intuitions and categories of understanding).

also, does anybody feel like you could read way too much of these "social skills" books and end up operating on a different plane of existence? like perhaps you end up trying to see complexities of personality that aren't there. or you think you're tuned into a power play that nobody can even detect.

You don't have to take everything from the book as gospel, but some advice there can be effective tools for socializing. Not everything will work for you, but some things might.

You can smell a mile off when someone has read one too many self-help books and taken them seriously. But OTOH they all say the same thing, so maybe it's just a personality type and not the fault of the books.

Im reading it now, hes taking anecdotes and extrapolating some truths that wont apply in every situation but its generally good advice.

For example not criticising people is generally good because they usually dont listen and reform so its causing strife for no extra benefit. Likewise if you realise that everyone fundamentally wants to feel important/appreciated, you understand social situations a lot better.

the best advice you can ever take is to "Be yourself" and that doesnt need a book to explain

The advice and tactics in this book only work in America. No other country has enough brain washed sub-humans incapable of telling if someone is being genuine or not.

The point of the book is to manipulate people. Did you read it, or did you just read the end of chapter summaries? Is anyone on lit actually literate?

I haven't read the book but knowing the type I very much doubt this is the case. Unless your idea of socializing is to be a lake-mirror for the endless Narcissi who only seek to reflect themselves in others to not feel miserable and in turn warp their images to your needs: it's this type of social engineering that every one of these books for sociopaths parade. But this is never true and this myopic view of human relationships is very flawed, you ultimately end up as lonely as the rest.
Some friendships were meant to be and some people just come together like leaves. This is a book for people afraid of living, and correct me if I'm wrong.

Bro... You can tell when somebody has read too many self help books only when you can tell. You cant tell when you cant tell, so you dont know. Your detection rate of things you've detected is 100%. Do you know what I mean?
