20729873 No.20729873 [Reply] [Original]

The world would be better off if schools still taught Flannery O'Connor. They don’t anymore because Flannery was born poor, sickly, southern, and her books use the nigger word. Read her if you like dark southern gothic tales with a spine grounded in Catholic morals.

Parker's heart began to beat faster and faster until it appeared to be roaring inside him like great generator. He flipped the pages quickly, feeling that when he reached the one ordained, a sign would come. He continued to flip through until he had almost reached the front of the book. On one of the pages a pair of eyes glanced at him swiftly. Parker sped on, then stopped. His heart too appeared to cut off; there was absolute silence. It said as plainly as if silence were a language itself, GO BACK.

The naivete of people about the South is really disappointing. You grow up in a world with strict class boundaries and people outside of it somehow expect you to upend everything each generation. It is like that with India's caste system people still bitch and moan about it. Thing that people have to understand is writers like Faulkner and Hurston got from the Old South because they thought it'd be nice for blacks to have their own houses with electricity. Now the latter I know didn't really care about integration at all but O'Connor actually did for religious reasons as it reflected heaven and dissolved differences between people somewhat on principle like she wrote in the "Artificial Nigger" where Atlanta represents heaven and to understand grace is to understand the desperate desire for grace of people unlike you.
O'Connor still didn't want to be around blacks in general but it is in the kind of Romans 7 attitude of look this is just the way things are on earth, we have to look past hypocrisy and look towards the kingdom. I think it's wild because To Kill a Mockingbird is still a big deal yet at least when we discussed it in my southern school the point wasn't "raciss bad" but more nuanced about principles mattering more to the point that bigotry wasn't the crux of the story at all.

You are making generalisations about a vast group of people. Excusing the racism of O'Connor and Faulkner because it was a southern tradition to lynch niggers is ignoring writers like Lillian Smith and Carson McCullers who were able to embrace racial equality while living deep in the south.

It wasn't like O'Connor was just a bit edgy as well- she was outspoken with her racism even in the deep south.
