This one is me by just posting some poetry that I’ve not posted on the board.

Here’s an excerpt from a longer poem. (You can also just notice he doesn’t do my characteristic long posting.)

the amazing way phrasings arranging
the rage blazing stays changing weight swaying
the sage stating aged sayings awaiting
the face gazing strange tracings prays praising
the ancient of days with statements that stray
with the rays of his grace, each displays
in maze arrayed the range is parading
in a pageant all the transient masquerading
masking with fading as fragments his garments the
calves that charm as gold, avatars metamorphose;
ouroboros sword-hold-lord rose more so poured gold,
golden glory greatly given gorgeously,
fell fiends falsely foisoned falling flawlessly,
hoary honored heaven heave horrid hymns
lovely lilted leaping like lordly limbs.

come stranger, fly the grove and the moor
past the eye that is door to the mind, come stranger,
alcove and the shrine, libations I pour,
hypogeum or fane i pour all the same, come stranger,
glow the runes with your boon as a jewel,
bright as the dew, of the cold, fruitless moon, come stranger.

i saw once in a dream a dark scorpion,
and yet a scorpion it was not, abominable,
for its body was the mangled flesh of many men,
like rope knotted, a great flattened face was its body,
like rope knotted, its pincher was the pounding of the fleshen heads of men,
like rope knotted, bone twisted like metal rebar,
and all was dark in that place, save the mouth of its mouth,
for under a pale light its mouth opened before me,
first empty and then after a little while a change,
two doll sized homunculi climbed in to its mouth,
at perfect parallel they held their knees with their arms,
and both homunculi turned an eye to look upon my eyes.

within the flesh where the dark scorpions
of desire burn with fire once ethereal,
I recall the palace marmorean,
and the princely face with features regal,
stately, yet so comely my soul mimics
in more than a scroll of an agama,
and more than in antique hieroglyphics,
for my skull, my skull is the agalma,
it is from this my soul, disconsolate,
tracing colors from the rainbow palette,
and repeating sounds across the gamut,
from this I fret to make in consummate
love this breath of song, to soar echelons
above, above, to he, the eschaton.

make the sounds terrible when the mouth’s parable
is not found legible, shake the grounds sensible
till the shouts pounds man’s mounds like the clouds, when the whole
earth thunders, the words sunder the crowds and rends the soul.

TLDR since it’s a bit of a job to find it on the archive, I believe that Joyce’s problem is that as much as it pretends to be ornate, pretends to be all life-embracing, it’s at the end of the day a mismatch of form and content, on account that the content he decides to write about is mundane boring people accepting the standard and substandard as the best in life, our “hero” being a literal cuckold whose victory is going to sleep and waking up, with his cheating whore of a wife, big DEAL! i say it’s crypto life denial insofar as its equality of all heroicism and types, that all men live and sleep the same, that life is it’s own adventure, effectively removes any ideals of refinement, betterment or excellence, his form is meant to be elitist but his subject matter is the common, his ideal is the common and in the end he preaches emotionally the common thus fails at producing the crystalline cold beauty that can amaze people on its lonesome. I actually prefer wake because of the abandonment of his sentiments and other ideals and his absolute fixation on his musical ideal, I also enjoy his poetry more than his prose since in his verse he strives for beauty without any pretension really.

>TLDR since it’s a bit of a job to find it on the archive
Use unusual words more often. That's how I find mine. And occasionally yours.

>it pretends to be ornate
It's definitely ornate. Don't see an argument to be made against that.

>pretends to be all life-embracing
I only see this is bad critics' evaluation of a book that they didn't really read. Not always their fault. The required annotations etc weren't really compiled until when? The 1980s?

>accepting the standard and substandard as the best in life
No idea what you mean. They're just innocent men.

>our “hero” being a literal cuckold
I think the part in the library got by you, if you think this doesn't matter. It's the actual center of the novel and gives you the real reason Joyce has you inside this guy's head for a day.

>its equality of all heroicism and types
Like... what?

>that all men live and sleep the same
They don't though. Stephen, Bloom and that wife of his are all nutjobs. Refusing to bathe is weird. Jacking off in public is weird. Molly is obviously cracked.

>removes any ideals of refinement, betterment or excellence
What would be an example of this? Didactic... literature? Self help?

>his form is meant to be elitist
It does seem to filter out the rabble and the literati with ease.

>his ideal is the common
I don't see this anywhere in the novel.

>in the end he preaches emotionally
Now I have no idea what you're referring to. Do you?

>crystalline cold beauty
This is throughout the novel. It's not a smooth glide though, if that's a requirement to get the crystalline into your system...

>I actually prefer wake
Too bad. That's a ridiculous thing to say, pardner.

>he is a paragon of the asiatic school
Wrong tool for analysing Ulysses wew lad. He does a sandblast job on rhetoric though, hopefully you got a kick out of that at least?

>I hope in a good way? Give me your take on it,

I think so. It struck me as a true take, that you put your finger on something significant that I was certainly aware of, but which never really *registered* with me. Too, there's something I've always found dissatisfying about Ulysses, and that cuck aspect may be the reverse-touchstone that exemplifies or is in some way the source of that dissatisfaction. I'm not sure, I'm still thinking it through.

Inside Frater's head is a movie screen on which an endless series of very funny and ghastly one-liners are being projected more than any other modern writer he has caught the interior winds of our time. Vastly entertaining even at its most acerbic. Reading it is like a wine-soaked ribbon being pulled through your nasal cavities. A ribbon with one big belt buckle of surprise on it. Asiatic and attic are used as a dichotomy in Cicero and older rhetoric, both having many sub schools but asiatic was noted for tons of wordplay and verbal tricks and witty stuff, I think wit can distract from the quality of a work if left unchecked, I realize my work is very much not in the generic attic mode but I also do not have any desires for it, in china they likewise had a school corresponding to the attic and middle mode of rhetoric (of which han-yu was the paragon) of which arose in opposition to this same style of “asiatic” prose, I use the term for Joyce since it’s literally the same methodology.

>not aristocrats

Nor heroes, nor mighty men, nor as in Goethe’s meister effectively deities in writing style; I don’t find being a hoe and a jack off particularly extraordinary.

>re Shakespeare

Mang the problem is, I get a lot of people consider that the soul of the novel and look, I love the decadents he references I love the painter shilled and so forth, I am even a REALLY REALLY big fan of Ae Russell, but what is in that chapter but a love of being qua being that you see in the rest of the novel? What is in that but an affirmation of the idea and art as the good coupled with the common sort of apophaticism of the mundane worshipper which despises the specifics of what is the good and why is it the good? Which is to say a kind of neutering of the ontological origin of their aesthetic beliefs, I even agree with Joyce concerning Newman being so high quality.

In the end I see neither great terrible beauty in his writing; nor systematic philosophy nor do I respect his Shelley-Esque limp wristed art-nature worship, you even see the same ideals in Swinburne who I adore the style of and u despise it equally in him, once more my problem with Joyce is I don’t believe the wild style he strives for is coherent with his content for what is the very section you point to but an example of him using the book as a soapbox to preach to us concerning his ideals with a pathos based rhetoric?

> Where can this be bought?

I really don’t know, I know he said something or another about printing from Amazon and how he’s placing it in book stores but I receive 0 profit concerning the book, am completely anonymous in relation to it and do not really have any interest in what happens out of it, just not really a thing I’m interested in ya know?

Anyways In a lot of ways I feel the likes of Arthur machen more accurately fulfills the ideal of Joyce or at least the good I see in it, or again I will argue his verse as always better, like isn’t this verse of his good for the period and style?

Gaunt in gloom,
The pale stars their torches,
Enshrouded, wave.
Ghostfires from heaven's far verges faint illume,
Arches on soaring arches,
Night's sindark nave.

Seraphim,
The lost hosts awaken
To service till
In moonless gloom each lapses muted, dim,
Raised when she has and shaken
Her thurible.

And long and loud,
To night's nave upsoaring,
A starknell tolls
As the bleak incense surges, cloud on cloud,
Voidward from the adoring
Waste of souls.

The Joyce quasi-insert Stephen lays out his theory of how Shakespeare wrote his masterworks. They happen to match Bloom's life. We're in Bloom's head for approx half the novel's sections, the idea being that you empathize. That's the engine inside the novel. It is powerful, strange, beautiful and heartbreaking.

I think maybe you bumped up against it and couldn't get into the novel, which is normal. But you sound like, well, like exactly that when talking about it haha just shrug next time.
