why is "degenerate" always the adjective for gambling addicts? as opposed to drug addiction or weird fetishes, gambling doesn't seem to cause the person any physical degeneration. i don't get how these go together? makes me think of flaubert's dictionary of received ideas. the entry would be: "gambler: dopamine fiend. always degenerate." if it's not in there already, my copy is in storage.
