Just finished this a few days ago. Still not sure what it's about. It's listed as one of the Great American Novels, but I'm not sure how it's relevant to America specifically aside from all the neat period-correct NYC inside info and jargon.

In some ways the main character is easy to relate to, his angsty teenage cluelessness is fairly universal. On the other hand he can be hard to relate to for many, since he seems to be one of that minority which is very observant and intelligent in their own way, yet immature and prone to flunking out of schools. Very Asperger's, and society doesn't understand or tolerate such people that well.

My mom says it's about grief, considering the hero has lost a family member, also I think she might be saying that because at the end he says "you start missing everybody". If that's not about grief, I'm not sure what.

So I'm not sure why it's supposedly so American. Is it all the shallow "phonies" in the story trying to better their image?

I could think about it more but I don't like having to squeeze out what the author meant. I'm a sperg and I like clarity god dammit

I'm a zoomer and can't muster up the energy to read anything anymore. And it's not a dopamine problem. Also nobody read the assigned reading in school and teachers were powerless to us

The book was created by the CIA as a countermeasure against sleeper cells. Its in american school curriculums so that isolated kids can self select as assassins, and later on as mass shooters, instead of as communists, or later on as jihadists. Read alongside Ghost in the Shell SAC
