non-meme answer: this book (which is schizo kino) is essentially an idealized version of her own life story and depicts a young woman upset by the gender roles of her time. she spends much of the book seething about expectations of women in early 20th century Russia, and in the book she studies engineering in order to become an epic captain of industry and thumb her nose at all the people like her dad who say such a job is not for women. ayn rand spent her entire life mad she was born a woman and her books are all about simping for the kind of powerful man she wishes she could be. read this shit though it's dope.

She gets expelled from uni very early on in the book and spends the rest of the story in a menial job. The character is also mostly respectful of her father, it's with her mother and sister that she clashes. Most of the boom is spent with her whoring herself to a high ranking communist to get enough money to send her bourgeois boyfriend to treat his tuberculosis, and then she gets shot while trying to flee Russia.

Why do most of Rand's critics know nothing of what she actually wrote? They shit on her based on arguments other people used and solely because they want to be in the cool kid's club like the second-handers they are
