20664560 No.20664560 [Reply] [Original]

Please teach me how to read more. I've completely fried my brain with internet and porn addiction for well over a decade now. I sit down to read and get extremely bored/tired after just 5 minutes. How do I overcome this? I want to be able to read for hours.

Destroy your headphones, delete your porn and music and any movies or whatever you have saved, and turn off your internet for 2 weeks after downloading the complete works of Plato and Shakespeare. First calm the oscillations of your mind by becoming comfortable doing nothing for long periods of time.

>> No.20664584

slowly work it up anon
if you can only do 5 mins, then do 5 mins. But next time do 6 or even 10 if you're feeling particularly brave.

By reading. Just like you overcome being tired after 5min running, overtime, by running. Your addictions are habits, most likely.

>> No.20664592

First you need to find books that are actually very interesting and hold your attention. Your attention span, speed of reading will only increase with every book that you get through making it easier to read more and more. IMO

Just read in the morning. Don't listen to any of these losers.
I masturbate daily, browse 4chan religiously, tune in to my favorite vtubers whenever they're up and play two daily hours of video games at the minimum. The whole neuroscience thing is just a stupid scam that equates consequence with causality and sweetly justifies imbeciles in the tragedy of their laziness.
Just make an earnest effort of actually understanding what it is you're reading. If the book says something then chances are you'll find it interesting, and that interest will fuel your attention. If you make an habit out of it and enjoy the simple act for whatever reason (expanding your vocabulary; having a sensibility for prose and sometimes visualizing it; theorizing and understanding as you read into each line) then you'll enjoy a healthy addiction to one of the most unhealthy and meaningless hobbies in the modern world. Your life will not be any better for it; if anything it will be worse.
But if you don't feel the need to then there's absolutely no reason you should.

don't bother with shit like dopamine detoxes and all that nonsense
just find something on the internet that you enjoy reading enough to stick with, then gradually start working your way to more difficult material
eventually you will reach a point where you need an actual book in your hands to learn anything once you are sufficiently challenged

Is it really true there are people who can't sit for more than 5 minutes and read a book? How mentally retarded are you to be unable to sit and read for at least 1 hour? Like leave your mobile somewhere else and just do it. At first reading comprehension will be bad but it gets better with time.

op something to note is that adults can still learn and experience neuroplasticity throughout their lifetime. although the brain changes the most when it's still cooking (sub-25) that doesn't mean adults are just retarded and don't ever learn. they do, research backs this up, and you'll be ok as long as you eventually do get started on the right track. and you're already one step there since you recognize this issue.

I watch tons of porn and spend tons of time on here and imo the thing that’ll help you is to literally go down in reading levels and then work your way back up. don’t try to pick up a philosophy book right away, just pick up some light reading like a genre paperback or a YA novel like Ender’s Game or some shit. you won’t get stuck reading only those kinds of books, but they tend to be written in a “frictionless” way that makes it easier for ppl who have fallen out of reading. when you’re done with that read The Great Gatsby, or Kurt Vonnegut Jr. always has nice short chapters and quick pacing, just something popcorn-y, and then like I said just kinda turn up the complexity as you get through the books

or not. reading is supposed to be fun, anon. so read what you enjoy

You're doing the human equivalent of watching the bull Orangutan Chad dick down the entire monkey troop. The face fold expression makes this easier to read in the orange monkeys, but is absolutely operating with you and porn.

You have no purpose, you don't see how reading is worth anything. You need to read Nihilism by Fr Seraphim Rose (50 pages).
Once you accept orthodoxy you will read like never before. You will find real worth in reading. Me and others who were t total degenerate hedonist never read a book in our life, suddenly started reading book after book. Of course, you shouldn't join Orthodoxy so you can read books, but rather, because it's the Truth.

On a spiritual level, it's clear why.
There is research to back up my claims, but I don't really care about that.

Pay attention to how you feel, ask yourself what hardest part is about reading a book.
Do you get distracted while reading? Place yourself in an environment where you can't be distracted.
Do you find it hard to first pick up and open the book? Make it a habit to sidestep having to consciously whip yourself into it.
Is the book boring? Read different books, there's no such thing as "correct books" or "wrong books".
Is it difficult to understand? Read at your own level.

The only thing you need to understand is that there is no one-size-fits-all solution for reading more. You need to ask yourself why you're reading and what's getting in the way of achieving that goal.
It's a very simple concept but a lot of people get lost in the details and forget the most important and simple things.

good advice right here
find a book that has a movie made after it that you liked
you will probably like the story and it will keep you engaged, good introduction to just the habit of reading
don't get ahead of yourself, nothing wrong with being less intelligent if you admit it, build yourself gradually and don't choose books to read based on elitism

I have only recently started to read books as a 20 year old. I relate to this and I can tell you that it does get better. my mind felt fried to the point where i felt like i had early onset dementia. I could "read" pages and pages before realising nothing went in. You will read like this for a while until eventually it all starts to go in. just push through and it gets better. Now I read loads of pages and not miss any info.

I've been making myself read for an hour every day. I just turn of the TV, open up Pandora and play some music, then just make myself read. The first few days is was a pain in the ass, but very quickly my brain adjusted and accepted that this hour is for focusing on reading.
