Obviously this is bait, but, yeah, the first three Hitchhiker's books are pretty damn funny.

I think the funniest book I've ever read is "A Confederacy of Dunces." Gogol has some very funny moments, as does Salinger.

--GAMEPLAY--

{in alley, after putting briefcase in dumpster}

BUM:
Who's there? I can hear you! I know you're there!

{PROTAGONIST kills BUM, he takes off his mask and throws up}

<Prelude outro - Convenience store>

STORE CLERK:
Hi there, man! Haven't seen you around.
Thought something might have happened to you.
You seemed really down over losing your girlfriend.
Don't remember seeing you after that...
...
Maybe we should talk about something else...
So, out for a midnight snack, huh?
Oh, don't worry about it. It's on the house...
Good to see you! Have a nice night!

I've read HHGTG at least 50 times. I can read the entire book in an hour. I don't know if it's the funniest book ever written, but it's definitely the funniest I've ever read. There are so many great bits, but my favorite remains Arthur learning to fly ("just aim for the ground and miss") and the tragic fate of the whale, but mostly because the petunias just think "not again." The invasion fleet that gets swallowed by a dog due to a terrible miscalculation in scale is pretty amusing too.

The five Hitchiker books are funny. Some people hate them because they're very popular.

Nor would I, but when he's funny he's funny. "De Daumier-Smith's Blue Period" has some great moments, as does "Catcher."
