Worked so hard on this novel back in 2020. Put it in a drawer and got a new job, did life, etc. Came back to finish it because it just needs the last two chapters and some editting. Re-read it today in full. It's shit. It's fucking mediocre shit. I fucking hate it so fucking much. What do I do? Kms? Re-write? I'm.... I'm lost.

You should destroy it. There's too much artistic spirit in you and you may accidentally create something the public doesn't deserve. You should only allow grifters to produce work, it's what the world wants.

Just finish it, you will forever look back at things you did and think they suck, this is just how life is.
But actually finishing things is important, it sets you up to finishing things later.

I did the same thing. Wrote a first draft in 2020, wasn’t satisfied trying to redraft it and moved on to writing other stuff. Recently I read some of it thinking maybe I could redraft it now but I had the same reaction of utter disgust. At least finish the draft then move on

Kys or just stop writing for a year

i'd say determine if it's still worth editing to bring it up to date with your current taste. if there are some things you still like in it, you could work on it.
part of the editing process is seeing what you don't like in your writing, so to some extent what you've described is just normal.
and also plenty of famous writers and artists look back at their previous works with disgust.

Here's what you're gonna do. Just because the 4th of July passed and Shinzo Abe is dead doesn't mean you don't have other opportunities. You have enough time to prepare to go full anarcho-communist on Labor Day; you could bomb an insurance building or their Labor Day party. If you choose the building route, and it could be as little as a floor, especially if they only rent a floor, be sure to do it when people are there, so it might have to be Tuesday. You have to kill them to make your book good.

We all “did life” in 2020. Weird and very different lives. You aren’t special.
Grow up and write another novel.

I'm quite glad I didn't publish any of my early poems though I was given the chance to. I went out of my way to bother publishers and to have my two literary friends foist my work on to unsuspecting employees at parties. I did it so much that I eventually got a taker.
But Then life happened, I had to leave for different country, learn a new language, practically raise a friend's kid, after his stupidity landed him in prison.

Already a year in I knew the poems wete no good, I could still probably get em published but but I was already unsure if I wanted to.

You edit.
That's the point of leaving it in the drawer. To come back and find its shit and rewrite it.
You must be feeling despondent, but look at it this way. You now see the flaws in your previous work. You are improving.

I agree with this. Most people never finish things because they could be better. By your OPs own admission the novel is mediocre, meaning it's better than most stuff. Pull yourself together and finish it! Even if it's just to know you can.

If you read 'on writing' by Stephen King he says it's part of his process. He writes, leaves it until he forgets about it a bit, then reads again and makes changes until it sounds good. If one of the 'best' writers has this problem, surely it's ok

Hey guys, it's me: Faggot. I just wanted to let you guys know that Stephen Hawkings i mean Stephen King is one of the greatest scientists ever and he writes books that are so good that i sometimes read 1000 pages in one week (its unbelievable i knowbut they are just so addicitive) I sometimes discuss Stephen Hawking with fellow /lit/eraries and some arguments come up that Stephen Hawking is NOT one of the best writers of the century, i clench my eyes and shake my head and say um what the fuck? not only is he one of the best selling authors EVER (much more than David FOster Wallce) but also he's one of the most renowned literary figures world wide. Here's a personal anecdote that is meant to showcase this (i know anecdotal evidence isnt science duh) So i was in Bhutan which is one of the most difficult to get into places in the world, the society is quite isolated and with its geographical position it is not so easy to access and not frequented by tourists. In short the place is hecking epic and non-touristy but authentic. So i went there and was sitting on the stairs of a buddhist (The people of Buthan believe in the almighty buttha) and sat on the stairs and got out my book:"Haaaah, time to enjoy a Stephen King Novel" i giddily said while the beautiful landscape glistened in the awesome summer light and the birds flew. Ahh... i said... oh this one its new. its called The Dormatory and its about a young man who's repressed homosexuality turns him into a monster that kills everyone and its because nobody accepted him fro what he did so only when 3 other repressed homos accept their life then the dead gay man becomes liberated from being a monster. Its kind of a common theme with Stephen Kings, that the main characters are actually really gay but i love it! I'm kind of bicurious myself hehe :)
So i was sitting there, the stairs made of old glistening rock, gray and muted as if carved out of the mountain when suddenly a buthanese child walked up to me and said: Stephon Keeng and smiled. Omg i screeched, omg you are a fan too?
i shaked from the excitement and the kid laughed and said Stephon Keengg and pointed at me and laughed its ass off and ran way. Haha the little fella just couldnt believe it to actually meet a real life american stephan King fan right there in his hometown :)
So what i want to say is that books that are easy to read but so exciting unite us all together into one. And i think actually that the so called classics (more like trashics) are nothing but a protective cultural device by the old white male elites to keep people apart from one another. It isnt so much about writing the best words, it isnt about the most poetic and difficult to comprehend sentences
Actually what Art is about (this is a scientific fact, ive read several studies on it) is a connective device between people :)
So when i hear: He's too popular, i just go umm yeah?! thats amazing isnt it? Ahhhh i really love Stephan King, he's one of the best writers

Idk man but it's really cool that you even got that far. I can't get twenty pages deep into writing a novel before I get that feeling and give up. I hope to cultivate your self discipline.
