20646367 No.20646367 [Reply] [Original]

There are all these books out there, all these subjects you can learn about. Great novels, great non-fiction books.
The moment I start reading a novel, I think
>novels are a waste of time, maybe I should've picked a non fiction book and learned about some subject
>maybe that's not the right novel, maybe there's something better I should read

It got even worse since I got an e-reader and found out about b-ok. Everything is at the tip of my fingers and I'm getting decision paralysis.
What's the cure for this? How do you choose what to read and stick with it? I unironically think of rereading my physical copies and forget that kindle or b-ok even exist

Read books where you don't get this feeling. Simple. They exist, but they tend to be rare.

Yes, they exist. Just finished one a while ago, but it was from a totally random recommendation in a /lit/ thread. The Shallows was pretty comfy non-fiction.

Books take a while to read so it's hard thinking about the long run, but I guess you're right.

I'm not American, but there are pure white Europeans in the US, a shame they are mixed in with racial garbage mexicans, jews, blacks, etc. etc., no doubt a degenerate and foul society, likely caused by a pernicious darker element. Still better than most 3rd world countries. Maybe not in the cities, but in the whiter areas for sure.

By being interested in it. It's simple as that. what this anon >>20646478 said. Read for fun.
Then again I'm convinced that 99% of non-fiction books you'll be recommended to read have no utility, and the utility they do have you could easily read from a summary or a blog.

They are soft and tiny. Holding a girl's hand is cool, but the best is after you've been with her so long that any prolonged contact gives you an impression of her thoughts/feelings. At some point you can tell when they are lying/obfuscating just by the slight twitch and change of tension.

See it as something positive, you will never really get bored, because there is always something you can do/learn.
I have a text file where I organize everything I want to read and put the books in different categories. It takes them away from my mind, because I know someday I will read them all (as long as I still live then hehe).
Don't download or buy everything right away. Just keep the titles in the list. After a while the interest in some of them will also decrease.

That picture reminds me of the time my female room mate randomly went to the kitchen dressed like that. Nice body. She was making coffee and doing the dishes. Didn't care at all that I walked in. Previously she had walked around in only a t-shirt and panties. She would bend over while vacuuming and stuff, but didn't seem to mind her ass was showing. There'll always remain some semblance of Fomo but I remind myself most other people have shit taste (ranging from restaurants to media) and that it's normal for some of the best shit to be unknown to me. I will either find some of those gems or I won't. The feeling of discovering one of these hidden gems can't be beat either. It's an active participation in the hobby. Make peace with your circumstances, there will always be something new or undiscoveres and never feeling at ease will only steal your time. Fomo is a disease imo.

The same way I learned how to no hesitate with everything else in life: just act. Don't think so hard about it, you need some impetus. Pick up a book if you want to read it.
You can read a novel every week or two pretty easily and depending on what you are looking at, you might read thirty or fifty books a year. Think of the wide variety of topics you could cover in just that time, I would say start broad in your selections, but start with what interests you most or even start with a recommend /lit/ chart, there are many books this board has recommended. Don't worry that you aren't reading them in the right order, if it's important it will hit you especially if you discuss it again here. Once you have read more, you will be so certain to your interests it will be crystal clear what you will read next.

One thing I also recommend if you have trouble reading at all is to read one short story or one essay every day. Get a collection of stories or essays, maybe one that will last you weeks, there are some with 15, 30 even 100 stories in a book. Little time commitment, just sit down at your appointed time and place and read one. This makes you more comfortable if you're not used to reading much. It's not just the-what-to-read that stops people, it's the opening a book part since many people would rather pick up a phone or remote or game controller.

Why a cure? It's a blessing. If 99% of all subjects, and thus 99% of all books, don't matter then you must absolutely, ruthlessly, toss every book that doesn't matter. If a book was truly important in the universe and important to you, you would have no choice but to be enamored with the book itself. If no book enamors you, keep dropping every book until you find one that does. It is that easy.

Organically. I just start reading things. My interest into one book will naturally lead to reading it more and finishing it, even if I start and stop other books in my wake, that I usually go back to.
Wash, rinse, repeat.
