Not him, and I can understand adjusting sentence structure if direct translation would make it sound weird, but sometimes I would find details changed that didn't really need changing.
For example, in Lupin story The Queens's Necklace, the original says Henrietta and the wife are cousins, but the english translation changes that to schoolmates. The fact that Henrietta suffered abuse from the hand of her relatives, telling us that to this family even blood isn't as sacred as money and social position, is actually quite important. Even more so, when Raymonde's situation in Hollow Needle is supposed to be similar to this one, explaining even further why Lupin was so focused on her.
Another example, would you believe I forgot where (think it was Woman with Two Smiles), but it was an epilogue that heavily implied Lupin cucked a king of a small fictional kingdom and was actually the one to sire the long-awaited heir. That epilogue got omitted, but given that the heir thing was never brought up again, I guess they thought they could get away with making Lupin look like less of a manwhore than he really is.

What level of brainletism does one have to be on to not realize I just explained the situation and you don't need any other information on these books, because it's not about them, it's about the fact sometimes translators leave out details that might be important?

Worst thing is when the translator inserts comments and characters that weren't in the original text.

Oh, those kind of liberties. No, fuck those. Although I did translate some stuff for practice, and while I did do it as faithfully as possible, I did come across a couple instances where translating an entire sentence, even in parts would just be awkward- I had to make the executive decision to cut that bit of information for the sake of the overall text, or awkwardly try and force it in. Of course, this was just random shit like, what kind of jacket a character was wearing, or something, but it's not inconceivable that this issue would come up involving more important bits of info.

It really depends on the context. I usually "show my working" if I happen to flesh out a single word (old latin, old english) or character (chinese script, e.g.) or no-longer-used phrase into a descriptive line to clarify, otherwise the reader wouldn't grasp the meaning at all.

A lot of translations of older things (especially in religious or pornographic contexts) did this anyway so you're first of all having to undo their mistakes (i.e. polite rephrasing), then reconstruct what was said, then translate it again;

Although this is done nowadays already with the same 'politeness' in mind so the meaning of things is lost or outright misrepresented by the reader as a result of the politeness translation;
e.g. "Jim had stolen Bills ice cream cone, Jim had really fucked Bill in the ass,"
if you didn't know that "fucked in ass" was a colloquialism for ripping someone off, stealing, etc., then you'd be inclined to
1) remove the 'bad words'
2) rephrase it so it had no sexual immortality
3) have had changed the entire thing and lost the actual intended meaning
"Jim had stolen Bills ice cream cone, Jim and Bill were frolicking and relaxing in each others company (reading the bible)"
etc.

I know first-hand that this is how a lot of Roman texts were translated, but I presume the errors must be a thousandfold with whole languages like what those clowns Wade and Giles did to Chinese to English.

>> No.20629408

Translation liberties are great but they require a deep understanding of the author, the work, its historical context, and of the language. You can convey meaning as accurately as possible but sometimes you end up losing beauty. In such cases, I think the beauty of the prose is more important than its accuracy to the original prose as long as it doesn't change the intent of the author and nuances of the text.

>> No.20629568

Literalbros can you help me out a bit. Is the literal translation of "A" = "bull"? Originally the symbol means bull so that must be the literal translation, anything else is a stupid metaphoric trick by those egghead demonrats. Don't use the letter a unless you mean a male domesticated cow.

Is this literally all because YHWH told Moses to go out and break the idols of every nation? It seems like Jewish politics, culture, criticism is entirely oriented around that commandment. I don't see how drawing a line between that and their historical and present activity is schizophrenic at all

Translators should stick to their jobs of translating. Not making "cool" expression or words. Good translations should be as literal as possible.

>The translator must never be frightened of the word ‘paraphrase’; it is a bogey of the half-educated. As I have already tried to point out, it is almost impossible to translate a sentence without paraphrasing; it is a paraphrase when you translate 'Comment vous portez-vous?’ by ‘How are you?
