I think the point is not to coom. This is what Nietzsche criticised him for. It is a rather cruel conception of love. The beloved is not loved in and of themselves, but loved as a stepping stone to the Good, or whatever. Fidelity and commitment to a single human being seem, if I am interpreting Plato correctly, to be a kind of error.
