Why does everything have to be about sexual deviancy and/or mental illness to be considered literature nowadays? Why can't it be about literally anything else?

Because people are suffering from a lack of meaning and developing mental illness on a large scale.
Someone writing about a similar mental illness people have and being able to put those feelings into words in an eloquent way helps people feel less lonely in their suffering.
Maybe they are not always eloquent but you get the point. The internet and its niche communities obviously plays a role in developing those mental illness. When something like ¨My lesbian experience with loneliness¨ gets big is because she's seen as brave unironically for sharing a personal story that people can relate to.
Just a product of the times.

Because there is nothing else nowadays. I am nothing if not the sundry abbreviations and mental aberrations in my Twitter bio.
