Most of the "good" writers of last century that got the nobel and are prized so hard by academia will be forgotten by the sands of time.
The nobel commitee and those writers and every college teacher that hates tolkien will be erased by time.

While tolkien will still be a very popular writer, and his influence in literature will become bigger and bigger.

Eventually Tolkien will gain mystical status, just like shakespeare and Bach gained it as well.
Eventually he will just naturally join the western canon.
