What does it take to become a published fantasy author?

I know how to write grammatically correct sentences.
I have a degree in philosophy.
I'm reclusive and have a fairly decent imagination.

Now what?

Write a book?

Would authors write books even if there was no money to be made?

Musicians play because they just enjoy making music. Painters paint because they like to draw etc.

Would someone write a 1000 page novel just because they like writing itself? Or do they write it for others to read and buy...

Now what?

How about you write some fantasy, fuckwit? It's not a secret recipe, moron.

Really it just takes a competent understanding of what it takes to write a dramatic story (there are several books out there that can set you up with a formula) then you just have to throw in wizards and dragons and shit. With your philosophy degree you could through in some some kooky ideas like mind body dualism or whatever most regular people don't think about to add some spice to the story. Other then that, just keep writing until you have a book, send it in, and I'm sure you'll get published, after all I have read some pretty horrid scifi/fantasy so the standards can't be all that high.

thanks. what are some of those formula books?

I don't want to write a generic fantasy piece of shit. I want to write a good story with fantastic elements in it, kind of like Italo calvino or John Crowley style

How many fantasy titles had you read?
Which authors are your favorite ones?

I haven't read as much fantasy as I should. Most modern fantasy bores me.

I'm currently enjoying:
Don Quixote
Little, Big

I translate things just because I like translating. I imagine most other writers are the same.
