Basically ALL ANTHROPOLOGY.

There are even books titled that:
The Primitive Mentality by Levy-Bruhl.
The Mind Of Primitive Man by Boas.

We are social beings, so our minds will be spontaneously oriented towards others. But since the social world is itself - or used to be - an image of the natural world, going beyond that 'primitive mind' implies going beyond social rules to directly know nature. Note, however, that going beyond means passing thought it and not just avoiding it, cause if you just stay out of society your mind will remain at the animal level.

The stages could be said to be: Animal mind -- Social mind -- Nature mind.

In a way it is a return to the animal stage, but this time in a self conscious way.

Being a primitive brain is good though. Being shallow and one dimensional will get you far in life. No one likes neurotic deep thinking types.

basically that in the past (he cites Homer regularly and the treatment of graven idols in Babylonia as evidence) everybody was schizophrenic and unironically believed that thoughts and the 'voice in your head' was instructions or impulses sent from the gods. Not only that but everybody assumed that the gods were directly in contact with everyone else too. At some point we modern people, the author contends, discovered that in fact these thoughts were our own and manifested from us which was a kind of birth of consciousness. Some people read this as him saying that everybody was a schizophrenic p-zombie in the past

I was the same. I used to be the very serious deep type but time and age has mellowed me out a lot. My social life is a lot better for it. It's okay to be introspective, just don't force it on other people. Keep that shit to yourself

This is interesting. I'll try give it a read after I'm done with my current reading list so far. I am being a bit romantic about this idea that we were all schizos in Homeric poetry... I have been "diagnosed" with it but I don't think I'm all that different. It's more of a cultural thing.
