>> No.20586247

I remember that article. The complaint was that search algorithms have gotten so fast that the main way zoomers interact with their computer, or at least files on their computer, is to just give it a memorable name and then use a global search to find it every time. As a 'zoomer' myself I can confirm, that's how I do it. My directorys are a mess, I just have a rigorous system of naming files so I can consistently find them later. Obviously I'm not retarded, I know how filesystems work I just find them less convenient, especially since like a lot of people my age I accumulate hundreds of gigs of files.

Despite that, pirating books is easy as shit. Libgen is common knowledge to anybody who has been around a college in the past 5 years. The kind of computer illiteracy endemic in my generation isn't the problem in this case, I really think it's something else. Normies take the rules seriously even when they're patently nonsensical and contradictory — I think that even makes it better for them. Finding a loophole in the rules is a kind of release for these people.

>Normies take the rules seriously even when they're patently nonsensical and contradictory — I think that even makes it better for them. Finding a loophole in the rules is a kind of release for these people.

Reminds me of where I live, New Zealand. Our culture used to be very macho, but it's been shown to be just a charade - we're purely a strongly peer pressure based society.

Without going full /pol/, I think the sociology behind the adoption of masks here is the perfect example of this. We got rid of covid until omicron, and nobody wore masks at all even while the first wave was eliminated. Government introduced mask rules - and people *slowly* adopted them (the fact it's slow is key - showing that it's an unfamiliarity with society's rule, not out of genuine concern). The laws for where you had to wear one and didn't need to were inconsistent. What did people do - consistently use it where it made logical sense? No, they just followed the rule to the letter.

Now the mandate has been ruled back, but people are acclimatized to that culture now. They still put on their masks as they enter a doorway with nobody on the other side, and take it off when they sit down. When there wasn't a mask mandate in place they wouldn't wear them - even if it was public and crammed. Now the rules over, people still feel dirty not wearing one when they're standing in a line in retail.

Fundamentally a change should have taken place when virtual media became a thing in which the cost of all media spiralled down into cents on the dollar, reflecting the fact that you can mass produce it infinitely and in effect, infinite copies exist, and thus each individual copy is effectively worthless and everyone should be allowed to download it for the pittance that the bandwidth cost.

Unfortunately as with most intellectual property, the creators of the content aren't doing it to create content but so that they can continually milk profit from work done once and sit on their laurels, so you have to convince people that a digital copy of a game or a movie is worth $60 despite no longer even having the five-cent CD ROM, and then have them help enforce that on their friends and family. Simple as.

TL;DR content creators aren't unlike landlords - they want to make a single investment and continually suck money out of other people despite not contributing any continuous work.

You could get banned from reddit a few minutes earlier, go to the kitchen to eat something, and then, grandma asks what you've been up to, to which you respond you've been banned from reddit. Another possibility is that you could have shown your grandma something from reddit after you found something interesting or were asked to see what you were looking at. When you show the thing, you talk about the site, grandma is interested, and that's that, but a few months later, she asks about reddit. Last time I had a job I bought everything I pirated.
Also what the hell are they returning it for? It's not like normies are doing anything with the money. They're not investing.

>piracy immoral (or they just don't know how to do it), whereas something like this is just a perfectly valid loophole
It's amazing we're at a point where piracy is clearly a morally superior option.

>I know how filesystems work I just find them less convenient, especially since like a lot of people my age I accumulate hundreds of gigs of files.
Your argument for filesystems being less "convenient" is that you have a vast amount of disorganized files. Are you actually retarded anon?

Information wants to be, in both senses of the word
The internet is being privatized, corporations are putting up paywalls to block off content.
Fuck gatekeepers, censorship is undemocratic and tyrannical.
Do your part and fight back by torrenting my fellow pirates

Thanks Op.

So here's the deal.
Amazon make money by the network effect, but the network effect can also be used against you in that you get lost in the crowd.

Say someone hears about your book, but in order to see it on Amazon, there are going to be 1000 other ads of other books that are not yours.

That, and the 30% or higher that they charge -- and now this?

Create a web site on a standard sales forum, where the fee is a flat fee, not a percentage, and use word of mouth, and you not only get more sales, but if your book does take off, the flat rate you pay for the site doesn't change.
You get to use their e-commerce without a charge, get all of your commissions, do not have the competition of other books, and, most importantly, are being duped into thinking that Amazon will ever help a seller like you.
