Reading 2nd of bernays' big 3, he mentions Lippmann and Freud frequently in 'crystallizing public opinion' are they must reads too? And also recommend similar books/documentaries/resources. Thanks.

Freud was a hack, Bernays liked to play up his connection with him familially and intellectually because he was seen as the Einstein of the mind in his age. Bernays core ideas of scientific study and execution of mass media campaigns is fundamentally incompatible with Freud's theories which are largely either disproven or empirically unverifiable.

Bernays is really a relic of an old age where media control was done by suits in office blocks. It's like trying to understand chemistry by reading alchemy texts. If you really want to be at the forefront of modern propoganda, read Recommendation Engines. Real, industrial scale opinion molding is happening on a scale unprecedented in both size and detail. Most people don't realise it but the greatest propogandists are not machines. In the future, propogandists will be computer scientists.

This is undeniable true, not sure about the rest of your post.

Not surprising you don't know. Recommendation engines tech is similar to nuclear physics tech in the 1940s. Its understood only by a very small group of people with a very specialised background, it has staggering applications in society and lawmakers don't know how to handle it. It goes by many other names, like data mining or advertising technology. But what it essentially is is modeling each user in such a way that
A) The system maximises user screen time
B) The system gets the maximum hit from a given advertisement

This is what Bernays talked about when he said appealing to the "parts" of a person, such as appealing to the worries of a mother when selling soap, or to the nationalist when staging a coup. Except its done on a scale he could not imagine. There is, right now, mathematically verified proof of Bernays' maxim that people are rubber stamps of each other.

This video, for example, is a long and technical lecture which 98% of the population won't understand the implications of.

Where would a modern mass conditioning PR Edward Bernays guy work today?
The government still does this directly somewhere? I cant imagine the schizophrenic unhinged journalist or media world is the place where the actual puppet masters reside.

Ironically Bernays would be struggling today. He worked as an advertiser, which nowadays are going out of business because of Google, Facebook and so on.

>Bernays
An anon recently turned me on to a gem of a BBC documentary "The Century of the Self". It's wonderfully done. You can find it on youtube. The first of four parts deals with Freud and the second with Bernays specifically but the whole thing was great and highly relevant. Strongly recommend.
