Critique of Pure Reason is a hard read, but it's really not as bad as the other two.

The Phenomenology has its reputation for a reason, but it's really the preface that takes the cake. Dense as a black hole, and between the islands of incredibly keen insight are riptide currents of downright incoherent run on sentences.

This. I started off with Hegel and just wasn't able to get traction at first. It's fucking dense. CPR is dense too, but not unreadable. I'm reading it now and haven't had the same trouble getting into it as with Phenomenology of Spirit.

I agree. Kant is a really good place to start with philosophy that isn’t ancient. Having Crit of pure reason, crit of judgement, and (groundwork for) metaphysics of morals under your belt puts you in a much better place to approach other philosophers than almost anything else.

2666 is the most overrated book of the last 25 years imo. There were brilliant moments but I found it just really unfocused. The section in the middle with the American journalist was terrible and the section where he describes all the murders is, in my estimation, just an exercise in stylistic brute force. (The last part about Archimboldi is great though, I’ll concede that much.) I haven’t read his other books because I was so nonplussed by that one, but maybe they’re better. What is jt you like about 2666 so much? (Also, I accept that I might be biased because I don’t care for Borges.)
