Average contemporary author:
>All art is political
Jorge Luis Borges:
>I've been anti-communist, anti-fascist, anti-peronist, etc; however I've always made an effort that my opinions, that are just opinions and, therefore, might be superficial, would not interfere with my aesthetic work.
>I believe a writer can satisfy his conscience and act in a just way, but I don't think that literature should reduce to fables and apologetics. Freedom of imagination, freedom to dream, must exist.
>I tried to prevent my opinions from interfering with what I write, I would almost prefer that people didn't know what they were.

He's not saying you should be apolitical, he's saying that art comes from a deeper mode of thought than politics.

You see, you are entitled to your opinion except when it's not the right opinion and if you don't pick an opinion you are still against the right opinion.

muh everything is political is utterly meaningless for the simple fact that words are useful when they have meaning and aren't just rhetorical flourishes you claim monopoly over.

Borges was the equivalent of a moderate conservative in his time. “Separating art from politics” has always been a conservative ask, because when you don’t consciously think about the values your art expresses, it winds up reflecting the values which support the status quo. This is also why radicals on either side of the political spectrum are most self-consciously political — in order to free their art of the dominant value system, they have to assert their own values in its place.

I say all of this with a great love for Borges. He was a great storyteller and poet. But his greatness was synthetic — the ability to connect existing ideas in novel ways. Borges himself was aware of this, and always acknowledged his source material in interviews. He never claimed, or wanted, originality.

You can't replace religion with sex.
In fact, if you really enjoy sex, you'll need a bit of religion to get to the good stuff.

>> No.20554234

What if his aesthetic work is just ego and thus superficial as well?
