It would be extremely rare for someone to pretend to be on the same level as a medical professional through self-learning, I doubt that's what is being discussed here. With other disciplines there is unquestionably a notion of credentialism which undermines autodidacts and places undue weight on college degrees which are in actuality often very basic in what they offer the student.

>> No.20548981

>>20548859
because autodidacts go against the system, and most aren't all that good.
I'd honestly go as far as to say that even people who now sit at university and while studying their field study something else in that field that isn't taught qualify as some kind of autodidacts, if you study theoretical psychology while working exclusively experimentally and nothing of that sort was ever encouraged or taught to you you do qualify for autodidactic.
You can't really learn anything by yourself in a NEET-like environment. You need at least a space to study and something like that you can get as a normal person only in university while going against the flow.

>> No.20549027

Like it or not, you need peers and teachers to bounce your ideas off, otherwise you stagnate and repeat mistakes and cliches which could be avoided if you engaged with other people.

>> No.20549101

Generally speaking, autodidacts tend to be superficial in the sense of them never really going super in depth into whatever they're studying, since there was no one to force them to. No matter how intelligent or eloquent they might be, you just can tell that they're not really up there with dedicated experts, that they don't have an airtight grasp over what they're talking about. That said, some hyper autists do often beat the experts, it's not something that's unheard of. Literature is another matter entirely, and a formal education is often worthless, if not maybe worse than that.

Surgery is a vocation, anon. Sure, it's one that's grounded in a lot of academics (which an autodidact could, of course, commit to memory just the same), but surgery is a job that requires a huge amount of hands-on vocational training as well. You're not making a great case for yourself here — both in the analogy you're drawing and for the implicit argument that, unlike the autodidacts, you are not a "pseud." Incidentally, autodidact here. If I can so casually and easily identify and refute your argument, which is ostensibly supposed to preclude precisely this scenario, what was your degree worth? Are you gonna quote Heidegger or something to get you out of this embarrassing mess?

>> No.20549136

I think it's just a matter of specialization. A professor likely specialized in something like Ancient Greek Lit and has studied that for at least 8 years. The autodidact probably doesn't focus in one spot for so long, but instead just reads literature generally. Most of them don't synthesize their ideas into writing, and so never really crystallize them. I believe one can become an expert alone, but it's just unlikely that someone would.

two reasons, one valid the other invalid:
1. autodidacts tend to read in a way that does not challenge their already held beliefs, while reading with a teacher in a social setting (this can also be reading groups, combined with youtube lectures or whatever) forces you to read texts you otherwise might have avoided, and analyse and notice details in a text that give a much better and more nuanced understanding than if youre just reading the texts you like and taking the things you like from them.
2. there is a strong sunken cost fallacy where people who went into massive debt for a nice piece of paper feel a need to defend the value of that piece of paper over people who just thought themselves.

>> No.20549192

True, which is why some of the most influential thinkers were either autodidacts or people who came into a field while being formally schooled in something else.
With auto-didacts, the vast majority of them wont amount to anything worthwhile, but the few that are worth their salt will probably achieve more than those who are formally schooled.

A whole society of initiated into the Myth of Unending Consumption of services. This happens to the degree that token participation in the open-ended ritual is made compulsory and compulsive everywhere. School directs ritual rivalry into an international game which obliges competitors to blame the world's ills on those who cannot or will not play. School is a ritual of initiation which introduces the neophyte to the sacred race of progressive consumption, a ritual of propitiation whose academic priests meditate between the faithful and the gods of privilege and power, a ritual of expiation which sacrifices its dropouts, branding them as scapegoats of underdevelopment.

Science, as many other things, is made by autodidacts. Once you get your PhD, there suddenly will be no teacher anymore to guide your learning, simply by the nature of the job in research. Unless you are able to discover and teach yourself new knowledge on your own, you won't go far there. And so also in any other field that requires maturity of thought.

>immediately declares he'll study the same that he studied in high school, and now cannot speak a single word of, and has egregious fundamental misunderstandings of

>sunk cost fallacy has already set in

People hate autodidacts because they can't do it. Not only can't they teach themselves, they can't learn even when others teach them. Someone can take 4 years of language courses in high school and college, and come out speaking less of it than someone who self-studied for 2 months.

Academia only really works with 'established opinions' in the first few years of your study, and only with the express aim of bringing you up to speed on the current discussions in order to better critically examine them. The further you get, the more you are expected to critically engage with those opinions. I suspect most people that critique academia never made it very far. Of course there are also many that do not live up to this standard and end up uncritically taking over those 'established opinions', but those also dont make for very good academics.

I should also stress that this process of learning and critically engaging with established opinions is completely possible without academia, but then you do need to have a community that you are able to bounce your opinions off and that forces you to learn and critically challenge established opinions. reading groups are great for this, but even /lit/ has this function somewhat, albeit with a very peculiar and often unhealthy set of established opinions.

I think people thinking that academia 'brainwashes' are usually the most brainwashed themselves.
