Certain of the "lectures" books are supposed to be the best intros, whereas the Ecrits assume that the reader is already an Adept.

Yes.

I’ll check out the book

I recently picked up the four concepts lecture book by Lacan, which I reckon is a good starter one then.

As for Freud, what should my reading order roughly look like for him?

Dunno, I haven't read any and it isn't an immediate priority. I have the Peter Gay reader which picks bits and parts here and there, would like to read some of that at some point.

For Freud, Interpretation of Dreams is the most important text to read and reading any of Totem and Taboo/Ego and Id/Beyond the Pleasure Principle/Three essays on Sexuality will be beneficial as well. Some baseline knowledge in Hegel/Kojeve's interpretation of Hegel is also helpful but not mandatory.

In addition to what’s already been mentioned, get Bruce Fink’s “A Clinical Introduction to Lacanian Psychoanalysis”. It’s short and accessible. Remember that Lacan was a psychiatrist before he was a philosopher, and everything he wrote should be understood in that context.

this is worthwhile if you’re an academic; if not, not so much
