Did /lit/ enjoy reading the Phenomenology of Spirit?

Absolutely not. I did find it interesting, though, but enjoyable? You'd have to be crazy to actively enjoy reading this shit.

I don't know why I find reading hegel exciting because i know he's important its very childish but I can't help it lol

I'm reading Phenomenology atm and I have more pages of notes than I have actually read lol.

obviously it's a translation and German to English can result in some weird things, but I feel like the definition of "substance", "truth", "appearance", "spirit", etc. changes with each paragraph.

I get a similar feeling with Plotinus, except it's mainly awe, and it's not really to do with how important he is.

I tried reading it at 18 or 19 and didn’t understand anything. Had a similar experience with Being and Nothingness. If nothing else, it humbled me. I don’t touch much philosophy now, but I have a layman’s understanding of it through philosophical fiction, secondary sources, general discussion with people far more knowledgeable than myself and “lighter” philosophical work like Kierkegaard. I’m in my mid 20s now and I will give it another shot soon, since I’m in a better place to understand it. I won’t start with Hegel though.

i finished the pos last year and i got the same feeling. having an understanding of hegel it's obvious why the words would change their meaning throughout the book, but changes between paragraphs are confusing. hegel wrote the book in a very short time (considering the extension of the book), which doesn't help either.

That is because he is a hack, Schopenhauer was right his whole system is pure sophistry, he changes definitions constantly because he is not discussing things but words. He was the beginning of the end, it is no wonder that he was sponsored by tptb of his day

He’s not a hack he just turned philosophy into art

Don't bother reading Hegel if you can't read German. He's untranslatable, and I don't say that often.
The German language is far better equipped at facilitating such a monolith of a philosophy.
