You don't need to read a book to figure that out.

Music is different from drugs.
You're wrong to reduce what you get out of both to "pleasure".
Why do the evolved mechanisms of your body reward you for listening to music? There's a higher reason behind the emotion unlike when you bypass the mechanisms of the body with drugs.

Does he argue from a utilitarian perspective? Is it like Singer’s Animal Liberation but for babies?

Drug addiction will make your life worse off in the long run, so it makes no sense to do drugs from a utilitarian perspective. Whether there's a "higher reason" for the pleasure is irrelevant.

The pleasure you get from music comes from hormones in the brain, this isn't up for debate. Anyone who'se ever had anhedonia can confirm this.

Why did our brains evolve to enjoy music? It didn't. For all we know it's just a pleasant side effect of our brain's wiring.

So will the hedonistic treadmill. Your optimal life is a computer controlled drug cocktail that keeps the doses low and varied enough to make the brain not get too used to any one type of cocktail.
People that reduce good to the word "pleasure" are bad at maximizing good. Given pleasure defines what is good wouldn't you describe the world in a more aesthetically pleasing and "pleasurable" way?

Retarded. What are the effects retard? In the most basic form aesthetics are about pattern recognition. You're rewarded for having a working brain and being able to signal your working brain to other birds.
