I haven't enjoyed a book as much in so long as with The neverending story a couple weeks ago. For me, it's peak kiddie lit.

Does this count as YA? I mean, I know it's written for middle schoolers, but there seems to be a marked difference between contemporary, post-Rowling YA and stuff like this that was put out by Scholastic.

Seconding the Sabrial (Abhorsen) series. You don't see a lot of YA books that are so frank about death and build their story around it. Plus, I found the setting really unique, at least as far as YA fantasy worlds go. Never read any of the books past the original trilogy, though. Are any of the other ones good?

Some guy did some terrific concept art for an imagined animated adaptation of the first book. Definitely worth a look:

this guy REALLY prioritizes that mesopotamia vibe over the canon descriptions
admittedly kino tho, can't argue with his taste

Isn't that based on the ancient idea of gladiatorial combat that basically goes back millenia and was basically practiced across the entire globe by various different cultures in some form or another?

Literally the definition of YA. The demographic is the only defining feature of it. I don't get why dumb pseuds are so insistent on pretending otherwise.
