I've only read him in translation, which makes me feel guilty and shameful. I know that Flaubert's meticulous use of French is the whole point, but I still really loved Sentimental Education. The temerity of suggesting an appreciation of Flaubert without being able to read French is probably unconscionable, and I anticipate a negative response, but you know. I like him anyway, although I don't think he'd have liked me back, given how contemptuous he was of the bourgeois.

Well, yeah, the french is nice, very nice; that said, it's not overly idiomatic, or at least it isn't in my experience, and translation discrepencies are almost minimized by his whole 'bon mot' philosophy.' That said, a phrase like >>2047920 can't map perfectly into english and a lot is thus lost.
