Any good books on developing comedy, humor, comedic timing, etc?

I keep messing up social situations by being slow-witted and unfunny.

Read Dante Alighieri's "The Divine Comedy".

Yeah you can. Ignore this loser

Learn some basic linguistics and speech act stuff. Sarcasm and irony is usually just an inversion, most jokes are based on logical fallacies and you could probably get an AI to write most modern comedy schticks today. It's almost mathematical because humans are stupid monkeys. Just search for the AI comedy writing stuff or linguistic/speech act studies about comedy

Also FYI, every ghostwriter for comedians would know this too. It's not exactly autism so much as you being low IQ
This is a writing board by the way

imagine thinking that reading linguistics books is going to teach you how to hang with the bros. As if the funny dude in the crew spends his time autistically thinking through “comedy formulas”

the real advice is to just keep speaking with people, listening to others, fine-tuning your social interactions over time. it will be painful but you can only learn this shit in practice.

>Haha just do it unplanned bro
This is what every commoner plebeian says about every field; be it an artistic field like painting/music/writing or something seemingly everyday like comedy.

Yes, you can do anything unplanned and off the cuff. If you want to know the theory behind *why* something works, you just need to look it up. Comedians use language, just like you and I; as do writers, as do poets, as does anyone who plays around with words and tries to make jokes or silly combinations

You can call it autistic or whatever you want, you only have an aversion to the knowledge out there. I literally gave OP the golden egg, I don't have time for some filthy board tourist like you. Think you'd be better off with your anime or vidya games
Just leave this whole 'writing' idea behind buddy

Ideally yes, but I started with this at a late age and after a certain level things stopped progressing. I used to be a (social) turbo-autist but now I'm just a regular autist, so that's good. But beyond that I couldn't crack a joke or a funny retort to save my own life.

I read a few books about Buster Keaton. I think reading someone's biography from a few different angles could just mentally gear you for comedic thinking. Good luck Anon

If you're intelligent you're funny. Period. Even the terrible socialized, if they're smart, are probably funny on discord or something. Listen to comedy podcasts and you'll learn how to be funny and transmute your intelligence into wit

There are definitely formulas when it comes to humor, and there is definitely an element of social intelligence to it. The very existence of the "funny member of the group" shows that different people grasp these mechanisms at different levels of prowess, like with anything ranging from skills at math, sports, art, engineering and whatever else. The mechanisms of humor are easy to understand and pin down, sometimes they get more experimental or unique, but they are mostly simple. I'll show you some videos that are considered funny and how all of them fall into one of a few categories.

These elements all bring an idea of "surprise understanding of a thing", something of an enigma being unraveled extremely quickly, which jolts the brain awake and causes an emotional surprise. You can experiment by combining them and applying them to random contexts and see what happens.

You can't. Please explain to me how you expect to learn comic timing from a book? Structure and theory, maybe. But how could you possibly learn comic timing form a book?
The closest there is to something instructive is the chapter in Jerry Lewis' "The Total Filmmaker" where he describes his theory of comedy which basically boils down to who is giving and who is receiving. And he gives some thoughts on why throwing a snowball at the expensive top hat is funnier than at the batted fedora and why people "love the man in trouble".
Anything else will be an unfunny analysis, sure, Jordowsky's 'wisdom of jokes' reveals some interesting insights in the Mullah Rusreddin folklore, but it's not funny. Nor is Freud's theory on humor.
