People exhibit magical thinking all the time, they just replaced "fireballs" with "racism", or "the invisible hand of the free market", or "communist utopia state", or whatever the fuck else floats around in our cultural soup that lacks any sort of solidity, and smells like death. You say 'religion', but there are actually, at least, 3 distinct phenomena grouped under one umbrella:
1. Magical thinking. When a self-flagellating furless ape (after proclaiming one's unworthiness and acknowledging one's own fallibility) asks an omnipotent being to suspend the laws of the universe in his favor, because it believes it can connect via one's intentions and/or 'backwards essence contagion'.
2. Myths. When you say "when the cat's away, the mice at play", and different contexts make this phrase mean different things. But, then again, even "Silmarillion" can perform this function just as adequately.
3. "Sacred time". When you gather and perform ritual immersive role-playing together. Performing Ancient Greek tragedies, reciting Shakespeare, playing DnD.
