The Way Spring Arrives and Other Stories, Yu Chen & Regina Kanyu Wang, editors (2022)

As stated on the cover, "FROM A VISIONARY TEAM OF FEMALE AND NONBINARY CREATORS"
All of the authors, translators, and editors are female or nonbinary. Though, only two listed their pronouns as she/they in their included biographical material, so not really much of the latter. I was going to have this as part of next month's theme, but it turned out that despite the preceding statement there's essentially zero LGBT content, which isn't what I expected. So, may as well post it while still doing Asian works.

The Stars We Raised - Xiu Xinyu (2017)
Rural children raise baby stars, but then their parents grind them up into a cement addictive. Urban children are uninterested in them. Possibly an allegory about hopes/dreams/personality/etc and how children feel about what is done to them.
Blah

The Tale of Wude’s Heavenly Tribulation - Count E (2011)
A black fox with 500 years of cultivation and is able to transform into a human, among various other abilities, prepares for his heavenly tribulation to proceed to the next level of cultivation.
Ok

What Does the Fox Say? - Xia Jia (2022)
A story about how an AI would generate a story using tropes, memes, and various rules to demonstrate creativity.
Meh

Blackbird - Shen Dacheng (2020)
A young nurse at a nursing home wonders about the elderly woman who has refused death several times.
Meh

The Restaurant at the End of the Universe: Tai-Chi Mashed Taro - Anna Wu (2016)
Li Jia, famed throughout the multiverse, orders takeout for a mortal that has caught his attention.
Meh

Baby, I Love You - Zhao Haihong (2002)
A programmer has been tasked with developing a holographic baby raising simulator. In order to make it as realistic as possible, he must convince his wife to have a child. Trouble ensues. Three years before this was written, Babyz was released. I was rather conflicted by this story, but I guess it won me over with the ending.
Enjoyable

A Saccharophilic Earthworm - BaiFanRuShuang (2005)
A troubled woman is a stage director for her plants to the dismay of her husband.
Blah

The Alchemist of Lantian - BaiFanRuShuang (2005)
This has the same translator and author as the previous story, but it's written entirely differently. It's filled with cursing, slang, and generally written in a very modern and youthful way. A being accidentally destroys something valuable to a human and feels bad about it and tries to provide recompense.
Meh

The Way Spring Arrives - Wang Nuonuo (2019)
A master and apprentice go on a fantastical journey to bring forth Spring.
Meh

The Name of the Dragon - Ling Chen (2007)
A dragon sealed away in a box for the last 600 years feels that it has been oppressed by humans for too long. It was already killed once and had to cultivate its soul for 4,000 years to get a body again.
Blah

To Procure Jade - Gu Shi (2013)
A eunuch is tasked with find a spring of eternal youth for the Empress, but decides not to do that because they would rather just live their life instead, so they steal imperial treasures and live off the proceeds. However, they keep a single treasure, a very ominous artifact indeed.
Meh

A Brief History of Beinakan Disasters as Told in a Sinitic Language - Nian Yu (2018)
An aquatic alien civilization persists through time immemorial until they must flee their home planet due to the imminent explosion of their star. Then, they'll do whatever it takes survive. Anything, anything at all.
Enjoyable

Dragonslaying - Shen Yingying (2006)
A doctor seeks out a dragonslayer for their supposed prowess at surgery. Dragonslaying is the surgical process of turning the fins of the aquatic slave race into legs, so that they may more easily serve humans as slaves. What she finds is far worse than she imagined.
Enjoyable

New Year Painting, Ink and Color on Rice Paper, Zhaoqiao Village - Chen Qian (2020)
An art restorer comes across a burned painting in pieces and slowly puts it back together. The commissioner proclaims it CURSED, but it's posted to social media anyway. An elderly woman comes to buy it, knowing its true nature.
Ok

The Portrait - Chu Xidao (2003)
The greatest painter in the land is the sought by all, but he's met his match with the newest woman he has to paint, because neither of them are what they seem.
Meh

The Woman Carrying a Corpse - Chi Hui (2019)
I don't know what this is an allegory for. I could guess, but it'd almost certainly be entirely wrong. It's exactly what the title says. A woman carries a corpse and many people ask her why.
Blah

The Mountain and the Secret of Their Names - Wang Nuonuo (2019)
A village is by a satellite launching site and debris falls and destroys property and kills people. However, with the warding ritual its effects can be minimized with the blessing of the mountain. A grandfather tries to convince his grandson of the value of their traditional ways, but the grandson believes only technology can be the answer. However, he allows that perhaps there's a secret of which he's unaware.
Ok

There were also five serious academic essays.

I find kind of the opposite, most fantasy tries so hard to be super interesting that it just falls flat. There's no sense of scale, every threat is going to destroy the entire world, the stakes are always 11 out of 10, everything is huge.
It tries so hard to be unique and interesting that it just becomes bland, like food with too much seasoning.

It seems you are about to read 4.24 - 4.31, the best arc of the early TWI. Good luck, it's amazing. As for the different PoVs, they improve as time goes, but the story is more than just the Inn, even if with time all the plotlines start bumping into each other. But I think you've already seen all the main PoVs. Still, for Volumes 4-6 it's overwhlemingly Liscor and Goblins, bigger stuff comes later. As for skipping, well, it's frowned upon.

I was hooked from page 1, which probably isn't the answer you're looking for. In terms of the plot, everything really picks up with Steerpike's increasing shenanigans, and I personally rank him as one of the best characters I've ever read. But imo the plot isn't the main selling point of Gormenghast, it's the ambiance / texture and the cast of characters that really put it up there for me. Peake was an artist, and I feel like reading the book with that in mind helps you see its biggest strengths.

Doubt it. Being male is a hindrance to getting published by the mainstream in general nowadays. Having some oppression points to spend for being brown or gay may be helpful but not that much. Just look at the Hugo and Nebula awards of the past five years or so. Utterly female dominated.

That's assuming your writing is pro-life though. If you're pro-choice, then you might serve the mainstream as an Uncle Tom well enough.

Was anyone else disappointed after reading the Second Foundation?
I feel like the books are getting worse and worse. I liked the first book the best and while the Mules story was great its end in the third book was cool but not as epic as the resolutions of the earlier criseses. The second half which followed the teenage girl was rather boring. It's cool to know the location of the second foundation, but I expected I would learn a lot more about it, perhaps even seeing a Seldon crises of their own from their point of view.
Should I read Foundation's Edge or give up on the series and read something else?

Reviewfag finishing up Mother of Learning - Arc 2.

Went with the audiobook on this title and was pleasantly surprised... at first. I had read the entirety of the first book so I expected there to be some translation issues in my head. Zorian sounded fine, as did the atypical narration but when he does aranae or any female voice the narrator makes one of two choices. Racist chinese person or stereotypical irish person. It was funny at first but the novelty died after 15 hours.

Like my previous review, I don't think too much of it. Zorian is often on his own and only bouncing off of others in a mentorship role. The interactions with his sister or others in his class are few and far between, only used to develop Zorian's time loop move set. Not a lot of soul to Edwin (golem training) or Raynie (shifter politico) compared to Kiri, with even Kael become somewhat one note in this part. Though the reveal regarding his daughter was definitely unique, if not delivered rather flatly.

Near the end of the part they setup something about unique treasures for unlocking the gate, which I'm sure is the hook to Arc 3. Zach and Zorian are now together and sharing information, which I hope remains constant. I'll pick up Arc 3 somewhere later on in my list, don't want to burn myself out on the series but I DO want to finish it. The narrative is solely a vehicle for worldbuilding, seems like he's trying to establish something more grandiose in subsequent works? Regardless of this, there's definitely something here it's just buried.

I'd say the addition of Arc 2 brings my score of Mother of Learning from a 5 to a 6. As a note, I'm subbing out Defiance of the Fall on audiobook for Beware of Chicken. I'm not finding myself enjoying how system menus are translated to a sterile audio, repeating itself whenever accessed. I also haven't started Lord of Mysteries as of yet, taking a breath after Ave Rem.

Berserker characters. "look at me, I am so enraged I cannot control myself. Oh woopsie doodle, I did something bad in my rage state. That's going to smart"
I don't get it, because Norse larpers are some of the most racist people. They hate Tyrone for being violently impulsive. But then worship Borgen Jorgen for being a rageaholic.
It's such a contrived way to create drama. When at any moment a character can just lose themselves and do something crazy, then it's only a matter of time when they finally do. But does it really meld with the plot? I don't think so.

>MoL worldbuilding
So apparently deal with that is the author made this whole-ass world first, and wrote Mother of Learning as, effectively, a test drive to make sure the world was coherent and made sense for a story. I'm currently reading it, too, onto chapter 72 I think (and arc 3 is fucking big) and I generally share your sentiment that a lot of arc 2 was basically pretty flat. It honestly felt bizarre how long it took Zorian to just fucking talk to Zach, like I get he's paranoid and all but at least say a THING to him instead of just being an asshole and ignoring him the entire time. I also, as I've said before, really would have liked to see more perspectives than just Zorian, an occasional glimpse on what Zach's doing for example, because it feels like he didn't actually achieve anything in between beating the dragon off-screen and the end of arc 2. I will say I am at least enjoying the characterisation writing for arc 3 so far, so it's something to look forward to. Writing style still feels a little flat, but I'm chalking that up largely to the ESL author.

That's exactly what it feels like. Almost written like a video game demo where Zorian is merely steering through the environment, making sure the NPCs and important characters are adhering to their scripts. Like a dev's debug room on an old PSX game. Correcting them when they're not.

As for Zach, I really can't believe it took two books for them to finally link up and share information. I was disappointed that Zorian didn't take that punch to the face; would've been cathartic for all of us. The character interactions seem to lead to the most meaningful development for this cast so I'm looking forward to Arc 3 now that they're aligning their drives and motivations.

Many redflags have been mentioned already, one that has not been mentioned is an otherwise typical mc (at least superficially, at first glance) but who has communication and behavioral difficulties and is afraid or unwilling to engage in social interaction.

This is just another way for liberal authors to push modern progressive agenda, by portraying and normalising such behaviour. Making it appear normal to have mentally ill people in the story.
People today, especially in the west have a ton issues due to modern unhealthy society and cultural trends, it causes them mental issues which soon develop into serious mental illnesses (like communication and behavioural problems displayed by many modern mcs). Instead of recognising and dealing with the root causes in a proper way, people instead go to money loving mental health professionals and get a perpetual prescription of various pshychiatric medication that only reduces their symptoms and does even more damage in the long term.

It would not have been appropriate for modern mc with such mental issues be written 20 or 30 years ago, but liberals worked hard to subvert readers expectations and understanding. Today many who see such character don't think twice about it.

If you belong to such group of readers then you have been affected by (often subtle) liberal brainwashing. Next time you see such character recognise his mental illnesses, reject his mc role in the story and reject the story itself. REJECT the conditioning done to your mind by the people who hate you and only mean you harm.

Any recommendation for not-Abercrombie?
I spent hours trying to figure out what to follow up WoT with. Eventually landed on his series.
I got filtered hard by The Blade Itself. Can't say what it was exactly, the writing just felt like fanfic.
Got about 50pg in and quit when all I saw was edgelord torturer gets standard TTRPG quest line, and every character has some sort of internal dialogue moment along the lines of "why am I me?"
It just felt like someone whose entire worldview was based on every other fantasy book they'd ever read, and that was it.

With WoT, you had a writer who was a multi-tour Vietnam vet + nuclear engineer with a ton of hobbies. Tolkien was at the Somme. I got the sense Abercrombie never left his study.
What do I read next then?

Ok so I just finished pick related. I give it a lot of points for doing “show don’t tell” well, but honestly felt like this board hypes it up too much. Outside of the fight at baldanders castle and killing Typhon, it didn’t feel like Severian had much story presence outside of “oh he’s the conciliator who randomly has special powers and is treated like he’s special.”

There are times where his wit and skill saves him true. But that’s far eclipsed by the amount of times someone in power or his special abilities bails him out. This + all the random allegory’s and foreshadowing made the book less interesting to me at least.

>it didn’t feel like Severian had much story presence
He does miraculously heal himself and others, which gives him plot armor and a sort of chosen one role as the protagonist. That's fair.
People like him because he's a tall, handsome, very well spoken young man - who's also a torturer, which to most of the people he meets is like telling them he's a bogeyman. Walking around shirtless in a cloak that doesn't reflect light, sometimes with a mask, and an extremely impressive sword. It's not outside of belief that people are going to be impressed with him and take special interest in him.
I also think you need to read between the lines a bit. Severian doesn't talk about his motivations and intentions openly in his narrative, why do you think that is? It's because he's a violent pussy hound. He grew up learning how to torture people in a professional capacity, something he barely talks about, but you can imagine it would make him a fairly intimidating person. Agia and Cyriaca both mention how frightening he is.
And you're overlooking a lot of resourceful things he did on his own. He earns Vodalus's trust in the first chapter, an extremely important person. He freed himself when he was a captive on the elephant being brought in to meet Vodalus. He killed the salamander. He survives in the mountains for weeks on his own. He immediately figures out how to neutralize the explosive weapons the people of Lake Diuturna were given by Baldanders. He harvests the avern and fights with it without killing himself. He escapes from Thrax using the water reservoir and contrives to help Cyriaca escape as well. He's suspicious of Agia and doesn't get completely tricked by her. He befriends and gains the trust of many people because of the force of his personality and speech. He wins his way into a mercenary company by taming a destrier. He finds his way out of the pitch dark tunnels beneath the matachin tower without hurting himself. He successfully sneaks around the House Absolute when he's supposed to be imprisoned there. He gets away with assisting Thecla's suicide, something he expected to be killed for, because he has friends who love him - that's not luck. And so on.

He survives Agia’s mine trap because he’s the chosen one and lucked out that her archer missed him. He didn’t die from typhon’s ring because Little Severian touched it first. He survived the battle because the archon just happen to find him. The list goes on and on.

And there’s also the fact that at the beginning of book 4 who goes from a lonely vagrant to the ruler of the country, purely because the Archean likes him. Yeah you could argue it’s also due to the positive traits you mentioned, but there are plenty of handsome, smart, scary guys who don’t just inherit the throne for the heck of it. It's a variation on the chosen one trope sure, Wolfe is working within the framework of the fantasy genre but it's a lot more complicated and atypical compared to every other story you could name.
And a lot of the stuff you're listing is just nitpicking. He fought like hell in the avern duel and against the man apes. Agia's hired man missed him because he has a torturer's cloak and the wherewithal to use it. An excited child ran towards a gigantic golden ring, ahead of his father figure, neither of them imagining it would have a magical enchantment that would immediately blow him away in a gout of fire.
The throne of the autarchy is explained to be passed down arbitrarily to members of the common folk so it could be anyone. It wasn't because the autarch liked him, he had been told ahead of time who the next one will be.
I think you're holding the books to an impossible standard while ignoring all the things they do better than most novels - which have the same flaws as it does but worse.
