It is supposed to denote a person of average intelligence but with a pseudo-intellectual bent---someone who cultivates certain opinions that they think are smarter than everyone else's but are in fact of an inferior level compared to those more intelligent and discerning than they are.

It only works because it is almost exactly replicates another word, nitwit, thus being a neologism that fits an already existing scheme

A further challenge is to identify the words for significantly above-average intelligence, and then for genius-level super-intelligence.
