I bought a 50 years old book about ancient Anatolia last year. It looked like fucking parchment and will probably crumble if not handled properly but cost roughly 2 dollars in my currency
I also have two very old tomes of Clavell's Shōgun (got both for free lmao), but the first one is so fucked up I gave up on reading it, fearing I'd rip it in half. At least it smells good

If you order a paperback from Amazon it's going to be bashed at least as badly as OP's pic or way worse. I have way better luck with buying books off ebay, new and used, just pay attention to condition and make sure the seller has some decent reviews.

I've had some luck as long as I ordered no less than three books together. Though they really fucked up my order of the Malazan books and three arrived severely damaged. Not a huge problem for book that will wear out after several reads anyway, but still.

OP would die of a heart attack to know the severe abuse that is done to books in receiving at those upscale small bookshops. The most fun I had at that job was ripping the covers off mass paperbacks before chucking them into a dumpster. We also had a pipe burst which did so much damage to stuff that was supposed to go on sale, about a hundred waterlogged hardcovers.

A paperback can't even survive being in a backback of course you don't buy those used. You buy Used hardbacks since they are often more expensive, in lower supply and often earlier printed. Then you buy from a few sellers untill you know how good they are. I know one that gives great products fast, one that is very cheap but products are in good condition but they put a red dot on the bottom which is annoying and one that has very rare books, is very expensive and 70% of the time doesn't deliver.
