Why did people seem to "get it" like 80 years ago when things weren't really that bad yet compared to today when it's actually truly over you have people who are in denial and say it's never been better.

I think living with the consequences of the Age of Enlightenment is enough to understand Spengler. Even though we are in some ways more in the Spenglers civilzation-phase, it was already clear 80 years ago

Yes but OP's question is, why is it less clear today than it was 80 years ago? Not absolutely, but relatively.

Harder to grasp the progressive degeneration of society when you were already born into a degenerated society.

If I had to guess, it's because the modern world is far more homogenized today than it used to be, it is harder to get new perspectives now, and we are all thought to think of culture and civilizations in a very linear, materialistic way. If you got the chance to travel to different countries 100 years ago I'd guess there is simply a lot more out there to experience and you can sort of conceive the rise and fall of civlizations

This.

Most people are brain dead consumers with no spiritual life or culture. How can they effectively judge the state of things?

The worse things get, the worse off the people will get, and thus they will be less able to comprehend their environment.

When things are at their worst, the majority will think they are at their best. Those who can understand the situation will appear insane to the blind herd.

It will be like a world of retarded children. Knowledge and perspectives accessible to any adult will essentially be mystical knowledge in such a world. That's how bad it's getting. It's called infantilization and it happens in every totalitarian society. People revert to a childlike state because they have been disempowered.
