That was...something. Pretty bleak and depressing. It WAS beautiful and touching, human condition, blah blah blah, but overall so fucking bleak and dry. I don't really understand why their marriage was that way (why they didn't ever try to fix it) or why he didn't just run off with Kathrine. For a smart guy who supposedly loves reading...very....npc behavior.

his wife was neurotic and straight up mentally ill and Stoner himself was a huge pussy. Also the fact that it was early 1900s probably played into him not leaving with Katherine or divorcing

Wow thanks for this critical analysis, I didn't pick up on this at all in the book. You think he was some sort of teacher too?

Like the other anon said, you couldn't divorce your wife whenever you I think I remember that stoner knew if he left with Katherine he'd be leaving his daughter completely in the hands of his wife

Yes the story is a bit exaggerated but there is still something of all of us in stoner and the exaggerations necessary to make people see that

I really liked the style of prose. It was concise yet rich. To me it was the perfect balance between the current style of writing and an author's like Thomas Hardy or Henry (fag) James.

People with Asperger’s shouldn’t read fiction.

In what way are Hardy and James similar?
