Eh, I'm not the biggest fan of this book. The authors argue that in today's society, there is a crisis of masculinity because we have gotten away from ancient traditions centered around the four archetypes that make up the book title. However, their evidence is shaky at best. They describe these archetypes and their historical/cultural background well. But they don't offer many reasons why we should necessarily be following these archetypes beyond the fact that they're old and they generally sound cool sometimes. There isn't much empirical evidence to support the supposed ancient wisdom. It's seriously just like, "Shit's old. It's gotta be right." Well, guess what? The authors also make some problematic statements. There are a couple statements that lead me to believe they may be Islamophobic. Their claim that Islam inherently tends towards aggressive Warrior energy is undermined by their conflation of mainstream Muslims with extremist jihadists. They also make dangerous though typical claims about history and sacrifices made in the name of progress, which at times seems to justify human atrocities and brutal injustice all for seeming "progress." Then in their conclusion, they start talking about a cultural attack on men and how we have to defend ourselves from feminists, which makes them sound like dumbass men's rights activists. The whole book, I'm still generally with them like, "OK, there is a crisis in masculinity. Let us turn inward." Then in the last chapter, they start blaming outer forces? Why did I just read this book? Like, are you guys seriously blaming gender equality for this "attack on men"? Maybe it's that society has progressed and men need to progress our masculinity to adapt and let go of patriarchal ways.

In a spiritual sense, masculinity is "forward movement" while femininity is "sensing/feeling/receiving". A lot of masculinity and femininity seems fake to me though, our society obviously is hateful of men right now because of backlash for the past treatment of women. So the masculine role is in a flux right now since it isn't clearly defined which is why so many men are adopting machismo attitudes, which come off as an attempt to stop an identity crisis to me. And it makes me wonder what the actual difference between masc and fem are, and if they even exist beyond cultural understandings. If somebody wants to know how to be a man, I assume what they really want to know how to do is develop themselves (become an adult) and get what they want out of life. I really think advice for this applies to men and women, the only difference is women already have a lot of guidance from other women on what it means to be a woman.
If you are a man it seems like you get to just pick and choose who you want to be. Men who are worried about being too feminine are funny to me. They are only worried about this because they believe women won't like them, so they try to be mean or insensitive because they think that's what women really want. You should just be whatever feels right to you. I can assure you that men who act feminine have no problem attracting women whatsoever.
