Dialectic = discourse, dialogue
Eristic = from Eris, goddess of Chaos, meaning deliberately designed to confute (or more derogatorily, confuse)

The dialectic of the sophists was called eristic by Socrates, Plato, and their admirers and followers because it wasn't intended at the systematic revelation of truth or even the deconstruction of errors that might lead to a better direction toward the truth, they were only aimed at making their opponent doubt his own positions, or making the audience doubt their opponent's positions. The accusation was that they weren't really logically refuting their opponent, just using "sophistical" tricks to create the impression that no truth could be found.

Again the implication was often that they did this to shift the emphasis away from the truth and toward things they were masters of, like clever parables and metaphors, and various other rhetorical devices.
