does anyone know the quote that i believe is attributed to Burroughs that urges people to consume everything from the trashiest of low brow media to the very height of fine art? i remember someone posting it on here years ago and i'd like to know where its from

I don't know, but I've come across this idea in other fields of writing. There was a copywriter named Eugene Schwartz that recommended doing something similar. Watching all the popular movies of the time and such to get in touch with the average person you would be writing to. I don't think idea makes as much sense anymore though. You can only ever be in touch with a very small sample size of "average" people. In most countries now being flooded with immigrants it's impossible. Not sure if Burroughs was advocating something similar.

Rimbaud uses some time on it

Pynchon is this.

most people nowadays with creativity and vision are working in popular media, so obviously they should partake in it, but at this point I think the people who desperately want to be men of letters and shun pop media are not the great intellectuals they think they are. A reasonable man understands that we've moved on from letter based art forms, no matter how tragic in many ways.

I don't remember the quote but I have heard this idea before. I never understood the idea that you can't develop a refined sense of taste while also partaking in mass pop culture media.
