If you had dedicate yourself to only one of these subjects, which would you choose: Literature, History or Philosophy? And why?

>inb4 history of philosophy or some other 'gotcha' response.

>> No.20356209

by 'literature' do you mean 'fiction' in this context?

This. People should just read what they enjoy.
I will still look down upon anyone who reads genre trash but it is what it is.

I would never "dedicate" myself to reading.
That's like saying I dedicate myself to watching movies or listening to music.
Now creating one's own work, that's something that one can dedicate oneself to.

Philosophy is just rambling nonsense from a bunch of (dead) old men. I don't give a shit what they think. And no young people is going to give a shit what I think of the world. They should go out there and form their own opinion. That's how intelligent people are created, by forming their own thoughts, not by copying the thoughts of others.
History is mostly bullshit, written by the victor. They're also mostly boring shit. This happens, then this happens, then this happens. Who wants to read that shit? They can still be useful and interesting, but you have to be choosy and clever when reading them and not just believe everything. You have to read between the lines and form your own opinion on what is not told.
Literature is the best. As they can include both historical and philosophical elements. They can be as long or as short as they need to be. They can be used as tools for teaching (the others can be too, but like I said, they're boring shit). And they're a creative outlet for the writer. So they're interesting for both the reader and the writer.

Forming your own opinions first is important but - if your goal is personal growth - wouldn't it be faster to explore ideas already developed and reconciled by arguably better minds? How many great musicians weren't influenced by proceeding musicians? How many scientific breakthroughs were independent of others' discoveries? The answer is close to zero.

I have 0 interest in "personal growth" if it means to read a bunch of philosophy books.

I don't know and I don't care. I couldn't give a shit about things that either has nothing to do with me or I have 0 interest in.

Truly a philosophy to model after

>> No.20360329

nowadays, probably philosophy.
I seldom read fiction anymore, although I'd like to.
Getting into a fiction book is very, very hard for me, I feel like I should be reading philosophy because it interests me very much and there are lots of philosophers I want to read.
On the other hand, I loved Gravity's Rainbow, I have Mason & Dixon on my shelf and I know I'd enjoy it very much but can't get myself to commit.
Any suggestions to deal with this feeling?

I study Philosophy and History and if I had to choose one, it would be philosophy
History is nice until you get stuck in macrohistory and the endless loop of just processing useless data
Philosophy (including philosophy of history and history of philosophy) gives meaning to history as a science IMO. Without it, without any larger story, there is no point in studying history except for autistic data collecting (like being a ChrisChan "Chris-torian")

Literature (as in fiction) is fun but not fulfilling

Literature is my passion I can get an inference of how people and society function from it. Philosophy is only a blueprint that is detached from reality like The Republic or The Prince. I might not be able to write theologians or metaphysicists but I'll understand other ocupations than just purely humanities. I'm not deluded enough to think I'm better or smarter then anyone which the metric of most wise seems to belittle and condescend other occupations.

It is fun actually.
There's a satisfaction I get from trying shit and failing then doing it all over again that I don't get if I just read up on and copy the most efficient way of doing something.
Must be fun being exactly the same as the million others who read the same self help book you did.

Philosophy and history are have much more valuable than you are giving them credit for. Implying that you can come to the same conclusions taught by philosophy and history just by "forming your own opinion" is silly.

heh, so I was actually thinking "history of philosophy" because it's partly "history of ideas" which I like. So if those two things happen to live under "History" and not "Philosophy", then I choose "History". plus then I get access to more than "history of philosophy". checkmate
