My comfiest time onboard is when you're on watch at night, and you have loads of time to read. My favourite watch for this was "first" watch, between 0000-0400. The ships dead quiet and apart from occasionally doing engineering rounds, you can spend the majority reading in the operations room. During Last years deployment, we was in the artic circle and I got to see the aurora borealis every night for about 7 nights straight. Between that and spending my time on watch reading moby dick, it's probably the most lit/ my time was onboard. It can be a good life, but very old fashioned. You spend a lot of time living on top of people (I shared a mess with 18 others, and that was the smallest onboard). And you spend a lot of the time tired, as it's early starts and long days (with watches on top when you're a watch keeper). It's definitely not for everyone

Picking out a singular poem is so difficult, I understand the appeal of that pound poem but it’s simply not enough for me, if I have to pick a singular poem if I’m allowed I will pick psalm 73, if we cannot count the psalms then it would have to be a really long poem due to density, so probably the divine comedy if I’m being honest. Don’t you think you’d rather pick long poems also?

Drinking piss is not my thing, peeing while caressing a partner is nice but I don't want it in my mouth. A lot of women are fascinated by men peeing so they typically often take some initiative if you state you're open for most things - just if it's your thing - but piss is quite far down on the list of what I like.

Visual novels are books with a few pictures, music, and voiced dialogue, that almost always don't have enough pictures to be called animation and don't have enough choices to be called games.
The most common kind of visual novels are either moege (visual novels featuring lots of "cute" girls, almost always in some kind of romantic circle around the protagonist, in which he may choose a certain girl over another one) or nukige (which is the same thing as moege, but with more sex scenes). Most moege have a few pornographic scenes somewhere before the end of the game, although a few developers are specialized in non-ero (SFW) moege.
There's also otomege, which feature a female protagonist surrounded by handsome men in place of a male one.
Besides that, there's some visual novels that tell some kind of tragic/dramatic/mystery/kingdom-expansion story, but almost always have dating, baudy humour, and sex scenes spread in between.

Are you asking as someone who likes it? Dislikes it? Is thinking of reading it?

Anyway, I'm a bit partial to it as it was one of the first novels I really read, I mean as opposed to the usual teenage existential crisis stuff. So I commented on it for that reason and because it's obviously one of the more eclectic choices in the thread. But what I actually like about it is multifaceted: the overall conceit is wonderful - the detached, cynical humor of the whole endeavor, while also maintaining a counterpoint (however muted) of real humanity and decency, and of course this is all primarily intended as allegory while still working as a plot in itself; the precision and detail of observation in everything from the events/character behaviors to the scenery to the dialogue, and the way this precision and detail confers the verisimilitude necessary to give weight and depth to the emotional development of the story; the excellence of the narrative structure, especially the way in which everything is concluded; and of course Flaubert's lauded style, which came through beautifully even though I was reading it in translation.

The only things I would caution a potential reader about would be the level of historically specificity and the lack of much in the way of "likable" characters. But these are not flaws, just demands placed upon the reader, who will be rewarded handsomely for meeting those demands.

Everything about the scene, the all-too-familiar story of the mid-19th century Parisian life corrupting a person so much that they become a husk of their potential self due to the poor choices partying provides.

Fred could have had it all

instead, he hangs out with radicals, a whore who eats all the oysters she can find, and he ends up being a shell.

It's so much like my college friends.

No problem, thank you for inducing me to articulate my thoughts about it. Still interested to know why you asked though. But I think it's a good question regardless, these threads would be immeasurably better if they involved some discussion of the books, etc. in question, or at least if people took the "judgment" thing a little more seriously rather than making up reddit-tier meme shit.

>>20326851
>Fred could have had it all

No, he couldn't have, the whole point is that it (i.e. Madame Arnoux) was unattainable, for the very same reason that she was worth trying to attain. Thus the paradox of revolution, moral government is only obtainable by immoral means that inevitably end up killing the moral core (i.e. Dussardier) which made it an admirable goal in the first place; and we are left with nostalgic despair. The morals you're talking about are still there but there is a layer beneath that which is much more fatalistic.
