I had the first ten in a boxset that I got from a Scholastic fair. I absolutely adored these books when I was young. I would map out the dungeons as I explored them to try to find every room. My favourite was deathtrap dungeon, and city of thieves

I havent recieved it yet but I ordered Rider of the Black Sun. From what I've read online it seems like it has better/more fleshed out mechanics, and it's much bigger than most. I'm looking forward to it

Are there any "serious" writers who have included such choice branches in their writing?

I remember loving the Lone Wolf series when I was a kid. Been a while, but I think you had to have a D6 on hand, keep track of gear, and actually roll during encounters and you could carry over gear and equipment from one book to the other.

charles dickens wrote two different endings for great expectations. he wrote the second because some people thought the original ending was too depressing. there are editions of the book that have both endings in so you can choose which one you want to read.

I dug this out a few months ago and tried it for the first time since I was a kid. I got so lost in the dungeons I had to draw a physical map. I got all the way to the end, I beat the dragon and I got to the treasure chest.
And it turned out I only had two of the three keys I needed.
