I read Die Unendliche Geschichte as my first "real" German book, it was pretty approachable and the actual story is fun.

Next I'm probably going to try Die Zwerge, as it seems to have a good reputation and I'm guessing it won't be too difficult.

Have you read Wunderbare Reisegeschichten des Freyherrn von Münchhausen? It's a pretty fun book, but it might be slightly difficult to read at first if you're not used to old German orthography.
