What different philosophies of art exist? I would like to familiarise myself with all of them. I know I have beliefs about art based on my feelings towards different works but it's not something I can verbalise just yet. Some people say art has no rules or inherent definition because someone taped a banana to a wall and that's art, but this strongly irritates me and my intuition says it's incorrect.

Recommendations for books that explore the philosophy of art are welcome but I am more-so looking for brief summaries of philosophies that I can further look into should they resonate with me.

So you're shopping for a philosophy that agrees with your intuition. A perfect example of /lit/

Yeah, don't you think it's nice to read something that articulates how you have felt but haven't been able to put words to yourself? I don't think there's anything wrong with that.

Arthur Danto - What is Art?

Go from there. Such a strong art critic. His books are deeply insightful at the same time as a flexible umbrella take on art and its multiple relations (to logic, capitalism, perception, fiction, history, et cetera.)

I found out through a personality test I'm not as intution based as I though I was.

>Arthur Danto - What is Art

He holds a firm position though. But exposes it pretty honestly in regards to the 'taped a banana to a wall' thing.

I was watching a girl on the interwebs talk about Art Theory. She's an Art Student. She said nowadays they break it down based upon "the form the art takes", "the concept behind the art" and "the context surrounding the art"

I've done a little further perusing on the interwebs and it seems like there are a few art theories. Google says "In art circles, imitationalism, formalist thinking, and emotional thinking are referred to as the three aesthetic theories"

Dont bother defining art.
Something is either worthwhile to remember and keep or not.

Honestly not a bad definition, but what if something you hold in your heart and remember is something that was created solely for monetary value?

There are as many theories of art and broader aesthetics as there are artists, instead of picking at random a book on aesthetics, even though it be a good one, it would be more profitable to research the artists especially authors you prefer, and read the works on aesthetics they’ve written OR the broader schools of aesthetics they belong to either in particular, or as a movement the aestheticians associated.

Of course you could just read chronologically, Aristotle onwards (but even before him really.) there’s so much on how and why a piece is good and how to construct it, and even why it is good. It’s just so much more practical to go by your taste.

You probably never tried - and if you did, you’d discover you think nothing at all.

I see a ton of intuitions but I'm very stupid and can't write about them very well. I need to see what other people who have similar intuitions write.

something is art if it is absorbed by an organism with an amalgamation of perception.

If some living thing has various ways to perceive, and it blends into one functioning consciousness, the stimuli it absorbs and computes into understanding is "art".

The rock lying on the ground outside is not art in itself, but it becomes art once I look at it. It has gone through my subjective filtering, I see it as resembling other things, different from others, reminding me of various things in my life. Anything I see gets the Midas Touch of art, anything becomes art because I have processed it, the stimuli is transformed and remains in my subjective world.

there is no doubt that things in a museum like, a statue of a pile of shit, a painting of a rectangle, are art, because things like a pile of dirt outside happens to be art too. "art" is the experience of perceiving anything subjectively, ya dig?

We all perceive everything differently so everything is art making the word useless
